"Quinceañera" by Judith Ortiz is a work of literature that we read this semester which is a literary mirror for me. This was a literary mirror for me because it mirrored my experience as a woman and as a Mexican woman. The narrator is going through the emotions of becoming a "woman" and is going over what are now the expectations that she must fulfill. This resonates with me and mirrors my experiences of encountering the first signs of what being a woman is actually like, including getting my period and feeling ashamed of it. The right of passage of turning fifteen and feeling like I now had to act like a woman is another aspect of the piece that I related to as well, being raised by a Mexican family and feeling like a had expectations to be more mature and leave my childhood behind.

"Two Kinds" by Amy Tan is a story about a mother and daughter and the expectations that a parent holds over her child. For me, this is an example of a literary window. This is a literary window for me because I cannot relate to the narrators experience, I learned that there are families that place very heavy expectations on their children to fulfill the dreams that they were not able to fulfill themselves. I learned that these expectations can cause tension within families when the child does not feel like they can fulfill the expectations their parent has set. I never had this type of experience in my family, so for me this was a window looking into a different family's experience.

"Those Winter Sundays" by Robert Hayden is a poem about a son reflecting back on his father and the acts of love he would do that he never saw as much, but now looking back at it, were important actions that went unnoticed. This poem is a mirror because I am guilty of taking a lot of the things that my parents did for granted. My parents were working class and sacrificed many things for themselves in order for me to be able to have a happy childhood where I had everything I needed and more. This poem helped me reflect on the acts of love and service that my parents showed towards me that I took as a mere expectation instead of appreciating them. I am happy that this poem was able to reflect my own experience and help me reflect on the acts of service and love that my parents demonstrated throughout my childhood.

"Biology" by Kevin Wilson is a short story about in which an adult man looks back on his experience with his high school biology teacher. The adult man had a difficult school experience and developed a supportive relationship with his teacher. This story is a window into the narrator's experience as a child because he experienced a difficult time and a result grew close to his teacher. I have never had that type of relationship with any teacher at school so this is a lens into what that relationship can look like for some students in school. This story helped give me a different perspective as to how there are students who struggle to make it through school but can find support in their teachers.

"Puedo Escribir Los Versos Mas Tristes Esta Noche" by Pablo Neruda

"Puedo Escribir Los Versos Mas Tristes Esta Noche" by Pablo Neruda is a poem that looks back on a former love and with sadness, longing, denial, and acceptance. This poem is a mirror for me because I have experienced emotions similar to that which the poem is describing; the feelings of longing and and sadness that come with a love that once was. I felt the emotions the poem was describing and I was able to relate to the process of trying to get over someone who you once loved. It is a sad poem but also comforting because the author has gone through this experience and he is writing about it, so it gives one a sense of understanding and solidarity that these feelings are relatively normal although painful.

My favorite work of literature this semester was probably "Puedo Escribir Los Versos Mas Tristes Esta Noche" by Pablo Neruda. This work was my favorite because I felt a strong connection to the text and the emotions that the author conveyed. I do not usually like poetry, but I found this poem to be beautifully written. This poem made me want to read more of Pablo Neruda's other work and to try reading more poetry.

"Evicted" by Matthew Desmond is a book that I read that provided a window for me into other people's experience living in Milwaukee. This book was incredibly telling as to how hard it is to live in Milwaukee if you are low-income, a person of color, or suffering from substance abuse. This book was a window into their experience trying to live in Milwaukee, my own city. I never knew how bad the housing crisis was in Milwaukee, but by reading this book I was able to understand the situation better and also how it happens. This is a book that I think many should read, especially those who live in Milwaukee, to understand the situation and to help change it.
