He admires the boringness of the novel, but despite its flaws Bellow appreciated Invisible Man, calling it a "superb book." By the end of the review, Bellow questions what would happen if the novel was played out and draws conclusions about the future of novelists.

He refers the college in Invisible Man as the blind world in "Note From Underground" and Mr. Trueblood's house as the underground black world. To Morris, Invisible man is a course from the underground world into the light.

Throughout his review, Brown takes on a rather satirical,  caustic, and borderline disrespectful tone to discuss Ellison's work. Some of the reasons he cites for disliking Invisible Man include: conformity to the formula of literary success, unrealistic situations that do not adequately represent reality, and that Ellison is disconnected from the true Black experience. Brown even goes so far as to label those who considered Invisible Man as an insightful book as ignorant and arrogant.

Overall, he feels that Ellison significantly exaggerates and is very repititious, which leads to the belief that it is "overwritten in an ultra pretentious, needlessly fancy way". He believes that the exaggeration on the part of Ellison "obscure" what he's actually trying to convey to the reader; "uneven in quality". A specific example of this is how Ellison depicts the Communist Party, disguised as the "Brotherhood". Prescott criticizes his usage of the name "Brotherhood" rather than the actual party.
