My name is Mrs. Schropp, and I am the Gifted, Talented, and Enrichment Coordinator at Concordia.

I am blessed to work with each and every student here at Concordia through enrichment lessons in the PreK through 5th-grade homeroom classrooms.

Brain Stickers

During Enrichment, students can receive "Brain Stickers" for ideas that show fluency, flexibility, originality or elaboration.

Sometimes these stickers will be given out by Mrs. Schropp, most often appearing on their work completed during Enrichment time.

Other times, they will be given out by students in class.

Be on the look out! Make sure to ask your child all about it when you see one!

Thinking creatively helps students to discover new, original ideas. Minds are open to possibilities instead of seeking expected answers. Creative thinking and critical thinking work hand in hand to help students deepen their learning.

During enrichment time, we will aim to foster creativity by encouraging each other to take risks and learn from mistakes. We will develop four traits of creative thinking: fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration, promoting creative and critical thinking everyday.

Family Trees have been around a long time but Mrs. Schropp gave us an activity to really stretch our creativity as we started enrichment for the year. She asked us to come up with a different format for a Family "Tree".

What else could we put our families on? We talked about a couple of ideas, and the Mrs. Schropp told us we couldn't use any of those we came up with together! We were excited to come up with our own unique ideas!

Mrs. Schropp reminded us the importance of sharing our creations with others, so she shared our work, from both classes, with us. It was fun to see everyone's ideas! While we noticed that some of the ideas were the same, for example volcanoes or rainbows, we talked about how they were still different in the end. We were excited to see that most of the ideas were unlike anyone else's, which reminded us that as we move through the year, we want to think of ideas that are unique and original. Mrs. Schropp can't wait to see what we do next!

International Dot Day is celebrated on September 15, celebrating creativity, courage, and collaboration around the globe. This year is even more special because it is the 20th anniversary of The Dot!

Mrs. Schropp read The Dot by Peter Reynolds, a story of a caring teacher who encourages a student doubting her talents to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark”. A small dot on a piece of paper transforms her confidence and courage, sparking a journey of self-discovery and sharing.

Using this story as inspiration, Mrs. Schropp challenged us to make our own mark in the world, using the art technique of pointillism, to create our own digital masterpieces.

We were excited to be part of the inspiration that continues because of International Dot Day.

A Game of Visual Perception

A game with one rule sounds so easy, right? We realized that couldn't be farther from the truth once we started playing Set, a game where you select three cards to make a set, from the pile of cards that have four different features on each one. The only rule is that all of the features on the cards must be the same, or they must all be different.

After playing the daily Set puzzle as a class, we each had to opportunity to create our own set, making sure that our set followed the rule where all features are all the same or all different.

(AKA Detective Thinking)

During kinder enrichment last year, Mrs. Schropp introduced us to Dudley the Detective. We learned that Dudley puts together clues to arrive at one correct answer to a problem. In first grade, we are learning that detective thinking is also known as convergent thinking.

Mrs. Schropp reminded us that when we are using convergent thinking:

- There is one and only one right answer.
- We may need to put together many pieces of information in order to find the one right answer.
- We may feel like saying "I have it!" when we find an answer.
- We may not see the answer right away and need to reflect on some of the clues.
- We must have patience because it will help us to avoid jumping to incorrect conclusions.

Mrs. Schropp read us a story in which we were introduced to logic elimination grids. We realized we would use Xs and Os to organize information from the clues. Each row and column of the grid would be labeled, and the way the rows and columns would crisscross would help us find our matches or eliminate information.

In the “Snowman Visual Logic Puzzle” activity, we solved a frosty challenge by coloring the right answers. It’ was a fun way to build critical thinking skills! ❄️🧩🔍

In this “Mystery Object Sensory Drawing” activity, we received a piece of paper with a box drawn on it, and a hand that appeared to be reaching inside. We imagined what mystery object the hand was feeling and drew it inside the box. The challenge? Mrs. Schropp encouraged us to aim to choose something unique that no other students picked. It was a fun and imaginative exercise that encouraged creativity and observation! 👋🔍🎨

In the “Zentangle Turkey Gratitude Art” activity, we explored the calming world of Zentangles. We learned about structured patterns and repetitive designs. Then, we applied these techniques to decorate a turkey drawing. Each intricate pattern represented something we are thankful for. It was a beautiful blend of creativity, mindfulness, and gratitude during the Thanksgiving season! 🦃🎨

We chose an everyday object and imagined what it would gift it would want for Christmas. We then used technology to bring our drawing to life, allowing the object to “talk” and share its desired special gift. We discussed the care and consideration put into selecting something that aligns with the recipient’s preferences, interests, etc. It was a creative blend of thoughtful gift-giving and digital storytelling! 🎁🌟🎨
