Why/why not is it effective? louiseforsyth123 https://padlet.com/louiseforsyth123/g6b97tt1ngawaisn/wish/839502370 This sculpture is effective in commemorating St. Ignatius of Loyola through the sculptors choice in medium, scale, location, base, and pose. The medium and pose go together well because Carlson choice to use a strong metal (bronze) to depict sturdiness and strength, but the pose is non threatening; his hands are joined together and the fluidity of his robe shows movement almost like he’s gliding towards you. The face and robe have some sense of texture to them to make St. Ignatius more human like. Carlson chose to make the sculpture larger than a regular human, so the statue standing at 9 feet tall conveys authority and power that St. Ignatius had and also the large influence he had in the world. The base and location also were chosen to show the importance of St Ignatius in that Carlson chose to have a large fountain surrounding the front of the sculpture and many places to sit and admire it on the side. Carlson also chose to place the sculpture right in front of College Hall, which makes the sculpture important to Gonzaga because that entrance is used by a large majority of visitors and students.
