Spark students’ interests to explore something that’s personally interesting and pique’s interest to learn more greatly helps multilinguals speak. An example is a high school math teacher who tasks students to work in pairs and groups and discuss inequities they see. Some notice that there are too few multilinguals taking AP math. Is that fair and, it is fact or fiction, they wonder???.
With leaders at the school, they use a mathematical formula, null hypothesis, to see whether the low enrollment is due to chance or pervasive inequity. Looking into see if it as a problem supported students to talk, speak their various opinions, express their feeling and learn the math concepts and move from silence to collaboration.
