Personal Stress and Self-Care Questionnaires

I took a postpartum depression test and a stress test on psycom.net. The postpartum depression tests I took resulted in a “moderate indication of postpartum depression”. I am thoroughly aware that I currently have postpartum depression because I have had to take a similar test at my doctor’s office and the results were similar. My results from the stress tests shared that I have a high stress level. My stress is best described as the term “acute stress.” I am not surprised by the results of this self-assessment because I have always struggled with anxiety and stress. However, I would love to change that and live a less stressful lifestyle.

Personal Stress and Ways to Cope

My personal stress mostly comes from financial factors and school. I am unable to work full-time because I am a full-time student and have a young baby at home that II must take care of. I do not always get the time to do schoolwork until later in the days. Personal finances, schooling, work, and relationships may all take a toll on a student and cause stress. There are different ways to cope with stress. People choose to cope with stress in different ways. Some people read books, smoke cigarettes, consume alcohol, pray, and others sleep. I personally choose to cope with my stress through regular exercise and practicing my faith. I have a very close personal relationship with the Lord. I also cope through physical activity several times throughout the week. It feels good to release some stress and make my body stronger through exercise.

Risks of Stress

There are risks that are associated with stress. The biopsychosocial effects of stress are numerous. Stress is linked through psychosocial processes like cognitive functioning and behavior (Sarafino & Smith, 2017). Continuous stress may decrease a person’s self-esteem and lead to more serious psychological effects such as physical and psychological impairment (Chipas et al., 2012 Having social support may decrease the stress that people experience (Sarafino & Smith, 2017). Research also shows that people with a lot of social support have lower blood pressure (Sarafino & Smith, 2017). A person’s social environment can cause stress if the environment is perceived as negative (Chipas et al., 2012). Stress may be the most toxic influence on stress and disease (Caparros-Gonzales et al., 2021).

There are several resources that are available for support. There are churches, counselors, families and friends who can help stress. My church family has become my biggest support when it comes to tackling stress levels. They remind me that I am not alone. Counselors are a great resource and there are so many ways to utilize them. My insurance pays for online counseling sessions. Family and friends are great to lean on in times of stress because they can share your burdens and help you through whatever is going on. There are so many local therapists, gyms, and support groups like church who are available to provide support.

Personal experiences and knowledge can help a client overcome stress because they will know the best ways to cope for themselves in situations they have already been in, or situations that are similar to what they have already experienced. Being knowledgeable will help them figure out better ways to overcome it because when a person knows better, they will do better.
