         <title>Reindeer Roundup</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong><em>REINDEER ROUNDUP<br>Michelle Wade (2nd Grade)<br>Pea Ridge Elementary<br></em></strong>One of my favorite lessons I've done (doing now). It incorporates challenging math problems (they solve these to get the location of the reindeer), and they work in groups so they are learning from eachother. It also incorporates Social Studies because they have to learn the world map (continents, oceans, countries, along with their climate due to how close they are to the equator). I also incorporate Language and Grammar using the  discovery boards to investigate each location the reindeer are visiting (reading about them), and when we plot the reindeer on the  map (personal map, and interactive bulletin board outside the classroom), my students decide what the reindeer might say about the place they are visiting and write a quote in a speech bubble that sticks beside them (we proof the  quotes together before posting them). It's AMAZING how hard they work when challenged beyond just solving a problem for an answer. They are so DRIVEN! Robotics competition on Nov. 3rd.  They learned how to <em>effectively</em> collaborate, create a marketing presentation and professional grade engineering notebook, design and build a team exhibit, and use engineering skills to build a robot.  They won 3rd place in the Spirit and Sportsmanship category!</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>We have a variety of transdisciplinary STEAM lessons available to our faculty as well as other schools throughout our county.  These lessons include everything needed from the hook to the culminating activity. We have also modeled  lessons in various classrooms across the grade levels.  During the model session, we explain the difference between a traditional classroom and a STEAMy classroom (it's all about the culture). We model the hook and briefly introduce the stations...they do their first and second station while we show them how to follow up after each rotation.  Then, the classroom teacher gets STEAMy and takes over.  This is their 'Aha' moment!</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>My favorite STEAM lesson this year was when we were studying weather. We read a story in our basal about a boy who was scared of storms. We discussed if they were scared of STORMS and talked about where lightning and thunder came from. We made a "lightning cake" out of play doh with paperclip on top. They used a balloon to create static electricity and they could feel a spark when the balloon rubbed on the paperclip. Then we made thunder by popping the balloon. </div>]]></description>
