For Pony to join the gang, he just was accepted for being Sodapop’s kid brother. Ana had to go through an EXTREMELY painful trial to prove worthiness. I think they are different because Ponyboy’s gang was made of close friends he had known forever, while Ana joined a gang full of unknown people who were only there because having a gang was the cool thing. (2) Ponyboy feels loyal to his gang, just as Ana does not want to betray her gang family. Ponyboy’s gang also mutually cared for each other which then again ties up with not beating each other for no good reason. In Ana’s gang, they beat each other up. They didn’t care deeply about each other and Ana had to suffer because of this. Ana was in the gang just to fit in, while Ponyboy was in his gang because they have known each other for a long time and were friends (and family) for a long time. I think that they are different because one group doesn’t respect each other and the other does.
(Q2) The similarities between the two gangs is that, one, they hate another group of people. In Ana’s case it is the Asian and African-American gangs, while as in Ponyboy’s case it is the Socs. Two, both gangs have committed a crime of some sort. Finally, Ponyboy and Ana both know what they are doing is wrong but yet they stay committed to the gang that they are in.
(Q3) Ana’s aha moment was when Ana read the book, “Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl”. She had made a connection with the character from the book (Anne) and the character expressed exactly how Ana felt. She then realized that being in the gang was wrong and she wanted to try to get out but she knew that the gang kills members that want out. The gang would be able to protect him against any socs jumping him. Ana was in a gang out of fear, and protection. Ana's gang was also made up of girls and boys, while Ponyboy's gang was made up of boys. Ponyboy also realized that they didn't have to be greasers; but anything they wanted to become. Ana's gang however, remained just as violent. Ana left the gang after changing her ways because of a teacher she had, but Ponyboy remained loyal to his. They are different because they lived in different areas and their was not as much killing in Ponyboy's gang like their was in Ana's. Some similarities with Ana and Ponyboy is that they were in a gang and did not have much of a choice of wether or not they wanted to join. Also, they both had to decide things on their own and both had someone who cared for them like Ana's Mother and Sodapop for Ponyboy. Ana's "aha" moment was when she read the Anne Frank diaries and she realized that she could have a life of her own and escape that bird cage, so she could be free. Also she had seen so many people die that it felt normal to see it, and I don't think that is how it should be in life for anyone, not me, not you, not Ana and not Ponyboy. Ponyboy's "aha" moment was when he realized that he could also have a better life where there are no socs or anyone like that that wants to hurt you or even kill you possibly. Also this is when Cherry and Ponyboy said that they could both see the sunrise or sunset.
