Blog post 1 and 2
This was a very fun start to the blog posting. I learned about the different categories of trauma. My top 3 were secondary trauma, burnout, and vicarious trauma. Secondary trauma is when someone has listened to or hears about trauma by an individual. I believe I may have even gone through this myself when I was the casualty representative of my base when I was stationed in Korea. I received the calls directly from the Doctor and updated our Headquarters on the casualty. This can be from injured to death. When I put together the reports, I would see all the details of everything. From the crime scene to the body, depending on the event. I was not directly in the situation but I witnessed it, listened to it and reported on it.

Burnout trauma is a long-term exposure to stress. It happens from chronic stress due to physical, emotional or mental exhaustion. The stress is too much for what stress levels we can deal with. An example is when a school counselor absolutely loves their job but starts to lose interest or empathy for helping over the years.
I will be watching The Trails of Gabriel Fernandez for my documentary. I am not sure how I will get through this documentary. This is one that I will need to watch as it is real and it could happen to any teacher, school counselor, or professional. Trying to protect the children and do the right thing is what I will have to do. It will be reality.

We received a lot of valuable information fro our profession again, all posted below.
Texas Education Agency Grief Informed and Trauma Informed Practices

Childhood Traumatic Grief: Information for School Personnel
Childhood Traumatic Grief: Information for School Personnel - Alternative Formats

Supporting Children with Traumatic Grief: What Educators Need to Know
Supporting Children with Traumatic Grief: What Educators Need to Know - Alternative Formats

Tips for Survivors: Coping with Grief after a Disaster or Traumatic Event
Tips for Survivors: Coping with Grief after a Disaster or Traumatic Event - Alternative Formats

Screening for Adverse Childhood Experiences and Trauma
Screening for Adverse Childhood Experiences and Trauma - Alternative Formats

CDC - Preventing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services - Categories of Trauma
Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services - Categories of Trauma - Alternative Formats

This document provides a quick overview of the various types of trauma.

During this week we watched our documentary and responded to questions. This was very interesting as I had picked The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez. There were multiple different aspects of an individual experiencing trauma. The child that this was about was not able to speak for himself but he went through an unimaginable amount of pain and abuse. He was abused both mentally and physically and he really did not have a chance. Not one agency truly helped him and they all failed him. His teacher tried to report to DFS multiple times but they did nothing. They trusted what the mom said over what people reported. They did not check on him in which they took the moms word for it. The teacher, first responders, siblings, DAs, and detectives had all be traumatized by this event. They have a lot of guilt even though they weren’t able to truly intervene. This was very interesting to dissect the documentary and try to figure out where trauma was and who was experiencing it.

Below are references we were provided in class that helped during this assignment as well.

Psychological First Aid Online Certification

This week, we took our 5-hour Psychological First Aid Certification course. During this lesson, I learned how to be prepared to talk to individuals or victims of disasters. There are many other certifications to take on this website, and I know I will take more in the future. This certification was very eye-opening and it made me want to help more.
Being there for individuals who have lost everything could be a humbling and rewarding experience. It can also be such a traumatizing experience as well but making sure victims of disasters get help, is huge.

We did a group project during this week. I truly learned a lot about school violence and how to make a trauma and crisis plan. My group worked together very well and I now have a product that will help me with references and citations in case I need to come up with a plan for my future as a school counselor.

My name is Adrianna Bascochea. My close friends and family call me Anna. I am currently in my Master's Program for Mental Health and wellness Counseling. I would really like to continue my degree and jump into the LPC program. I do have three years until I retire from the Air Force first but I would love to become a school counselor, eventually. I am not currently working for anything that has to do with my degree. Once I retire, I will be ready to pursue something.
Durnig this class, I would love to learn how to handle trauma and crisis events. This will also help me in the Air Force. I do have a section in my job currently that deals with casualty. I was the first person that medical commander called to give the status of an injured, seriously injured, very seriously injured, or death. This was extremely hard and we had our reporting instructions but I would love to learn what it is like for mental health professionals to process. We also have the emergency shelters and tend to our customers who have gone through a disaster. We keep accountability and provide resources for help. So far, I have learned from the Psychological First Aid training, we follow a lot of the same processes. This made it a little easier to finish and exciting as well.

ABC Module of Crisis Intervention
During this week we got to learn about the different forms of needs. This included physical, emotional, and social/relational, mental/cognitive. Putting myself into a scenario and pulling it out which form was which, truly helped me to try and understand each part of a counseling session. Being able to identy the physical needs from the mental needs will help with counseling sessions as well as real life situations in the long run.

ABCD of Crisis Intervention Handout

ABCD of Crisis Intervention Handout - Alternative Formats

Crisis Interventions: Issues and Challenges
Crisis Interventions: Issues and Challenges - Alternative Formats
Overview of Crisis Intervention
Overview of Crisis Intervention - Alternative Formats
Dustin McDonald ABC Model of Crisis Intervention
Crisis Intervention Handbook: Assessment, Treatment, and Research

Importance of Cultural Competence

Cultural competence is going to be such a huge factor in being a school counselor. Each individual is brought up different based on their background. Children do not know any difference than what they see around them. If they are growing up in an abusive household, they may think that this is normal and behave the same way. If they grow up in a very strict household, they may be scared to do anything except follow rules. This will help me to learn the children and know how they are at home and at school. This may help to see why they do the things they do.
