This quote is the most important in the book for many reasons. In my book Rooster's father died and he lives with his mother and stepfather who both don't like him. When he gets paired up with the principals straight A daughter he hates it. But then gets into writing a lot and it helps him get through his struggles at home and school. Elma tells him to write a diary entry about his father. In the entry he said "I am now realizing. It is time to move on. Or as Dad used to say. It's time to spark it and drive." This is when Rooster's life changed and he started succeeding in school and he finds peace with his mother and step father.

Rooster has been down in the dumps ever since his Father died 7 years ago. The school counselor sets up rooster with a program to make a league for special needs adults to go bowling every sunday. This helps rooster with all his stress from his step father and school. This is also a big turning point for rooster because he feels he is doing something good instead of feeling guilty for smoking weed and fighting with his girlfriend and mother.

Book Review From Booklist

Gr 9 Up –Since the death of his father seven years ago, 17-year-old Rooster has developed an anti-authority attitude. The only subject he enjoys is writing. He is given one last chance to earn a diploma when his principal appoints him to mentor the “Strikers,” a bowling team made up of four special-needs adults. Their caregiver would like them to qualify for the Special Olympics, but they lack the discipline to succeed. Not only is Rooster hesitant to lead the group , but he is also paired up with the principal's bossy, straight-A daughter, Elma, who challenges everything he does. He gradually earns the group 's trust, so the sudden death of a teammate affects him more than he expected. When the bowlers achieve their goal, his job is over. Then he is given an assignment to write about the Strikers, tries his hand at it, and finds satisfaction. This project and revelations about his father's love of reading help Rooster find peace within himself. Now, instead of burying his memories, he has found a way to connect with and honor them. Rooster is a believable young man who is barely going through the motions of life. With spot-on dialogue and riotous arguments among the Strikers, this is a smart story peppered with mature situations.–Karen Hoth, Marathon Middle/High School, FL --Karen Hoth (Reviewed January 1 , 2006) (School Library Journal, vol 52, issue 1 , p144)

I like the book review and it includes some important facts such as, Rooster getting paired up with Elma for the Special needs bowling program. However I do believe that the review should've included more of Rooster's relationship with his Mother, Step Father and Girlfriend. The whole book almost generates of off his relationship with those three. The writer also didn't state Rooster's relationship with his Father before he passed.

I chose flashbacks as the main literary element to describe this book. I chose flashback because whenever Rooster does something that he remembers he did with his Father he often refers back to those moments and memories. Also sometimes he gets angry with his mother then he has flashbacks to points in his life where he has had wonderful memories with his mother and he cherishes those. Or even when his step father does or says something to him he will flashback to his father and sometimes he gets mad because he thinks his step father will be nothing like his real father.

I chose the extra element to be a person journal. This is an extremely important piece of the book. Rooster has his own journal that his classmate Elma gets him and he appreciated a lot. He put down all his feelings about the special ed bowling group that the school had him do, he put in all his thoughts about his step father and his mother. Basically all the things he didn't want to say out loud. I feel this helps him crawl out of the seven year hole he's been in since his father passed. His journal also helps him a lot in school, he now enjoys writing a lot.
