The way he created the back of the person’s suit by only using thick markings on top of a lightly shaded are is very effective. The intense black lines in addition to all the shades of grey add a lot of depth to this piece. The way the text is perfectly aligned on top of a chaotic background gives this piece even more contrast.

Affect: I get a sense of emptiness confusion from this piece. “In whose lap do I lie” is a question; however, there is no visible question mark in the piece. The subject’s head is in the place where the question mark belongs which makes me feel as if the subject is the person asking the question. It gives the piece depth while not taking away from the more important details of the drawing. I also really enjoyed how he had a very geometric approach - the straight lines really emphasize the proportions of the human skull.

Affect: The way Leonardo da Vinci made this piece geometric & realistically proportional makes me feel as if this belongs in a science textbook or another source of education. It feels as if this piece was made with the sole purpose of educating the viewer and/or to contribute art skills towards the growing science community.

Firstly, this piece uses Hierarchy to convey which subjects are most important. Most of the symbols are tiny whereas every person is the same size with the exception of 1 - their leader. This piece has a wide variety of line weight - not many areas are bold/filled in so the artist uses bolder lines to create focal points.

Affect: This piece makes me feel a bit overwhelmed due to the minimal amount of white space; however, I also feel very curious about what story they’re attempting to tell with all the various symbols. The 3 square panels on the right contribute towards this curiosity even more.
