The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan was over the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Most people who live there are either Azeri or Armenian. Both places have religious sites in the region. They declared their independence from Russia in 1918. Later, they became a part of the Soviet Union in 1936 and finally declared their independence in 1991. This may be considered a shatterbelt region.
