I believe in positive reinforcement for the most part. If a behavior repeats itself every day then some punishment is necessary. Pulling the child away from the others and giving them a time out is acceptable form.

It is imperative to use positive reinforcement as a motivator to make good choices. Reasonable consequences allow a student to see that his or her choices lead to a path of action. Punishment just causes the student to avoid the negative aftermath rather than wanting to do the right thing intrinsically.

Positive reinforcement should be mainly used in the classroom. Consequences are a response to behavior, which can teach a student to lean more towards better choices. Punishment should be avoided because it will cause a child to find other ways to avoid the negative repercussions.

I.e. if a student is displaying an undesirable behavior such as not disrupting the class or not completing classwork and we know that this student really cherishes recess, taking away recess for an appropriate amount of time may have a greater impact on them than a consequence that is less meaningful to them. It is very important to be impactful, not cruel and to NOT go overboard when practicing this method.

Absolutley, discipline of a parent may look very different than that of a teacher. Parents have more rights with their child than a teacher ever will and there are certain lines and boundaries that a parent can cross that a teacher should never. However, I do believe that a greater affect could be made in the child's behavior if discipline is cohesive across the board, meaning that teachers and parents collaborate together to come up with a discipline plan and the parents can take a more involved or personal approach in the home if needed.

We should teach children expected behaviors by using positive reinforcement and consequences only. Punishment should be used as a last resort. At Visions, every student has a point card that they carry with them to each hour of the day. They receive a checkmark or X at the end of each period - checkmark for appropriate behavior and X for inappropriate behavior. They may also receive a "paw print" for exceptional behavior. Its amazing how excited our students get over receiving a paw print. Positive reinforcements work best at our school.

I feel we should teach children expected behaviors by using positive reinforcement. When we give recognition and attention to positive behaviors, the child will begin to want to make these good choices. As stated in the video, if the child is having positive conversations with parents and learning from these conversations, they will be more likely to seek out this input. The more we encourage our children with positivity, the more they will seek the positive behavior. I feel positive reinforcement should be used most.

I do feel that modeling is a very important tool to use when seeking a desired behavior as well. It allows the child to see a real life example of the expectations.

I also feel that sometimes when a child acts out it is a result of overstimulation or struggling with their emotions. Sometimes taking a step back and having a moment to breathe and express their emotions in a more constructive manner can be beneficial. This may look like an area of the room designated for calming down perhaps with some sensory tools such as weighted blankets or fidgets.
