Competition grew when the following Olympics were held in Los Angles and the Soviet Union boycotted the games but was one of the only ones to do so. 
2. The Miracle on Ice happened which put a lot of tension between the US and the USSR. Washington and Moscow viewed the Olympic medal rankings as a competition between democracy and communism to determine which system could produce better athletes. 
3. USSR may have taken the Olympics too seriously because they wanted power. The Games provided an opportunity to show the dominance of the Soviet Union to the world. Most of the events are the same today as they were. During the cold war, popular games were basketball, volleyball, soccer, water polo, hockey, and more. Today those are still some of the most popular games watched today along with gymnastics and tennis.
2. Germany and the US are both top teams with medals to this day. Germany has won a total of 974 Olympic medals putting them at number three overall, and the US in first with 2636 Olympic medals.
3. Germany’s best events in the winter Olympics. In 1980 the Soviet Union wom more gold medals but  East Germany won more medals overall. Germany has continued to stay ranking high in the winter Olympics and this year they were placed 2nd in the Winter Olympics.
