Loom - highly recommended

I use loom for screencasting and didactic teaching. It helps my flipped classroom set up. The students can engage with content before we apply them collaboratively in class. Students can catch up on missed classes. It's easy to share to Google Classrooms. I get feedback on each video, what worked and what didn't for my students. For only $10 a month, it's the most valuable and most used subscription I have.

Students will now start using Loom to record and present their assessments. Using ICT in this way aligns with Australian Curriculum rationales for both Economics and Business and Media Arts - CK, PCK and TPCK.

So before you read the ad below, I was considering using Adobe Connect as a fully integrated learning management system, because Adobe products are absolutely essential to Business and Media subjects, BUT... I did a trial of the software and it's really more aimed at running businesses efficiently. Like Photoshop, it does all sorts of amazing and fantastic things but most of its features are just unnecessarily complicated for a secondary school level. So it's a no from me, for now.

Why choose Adobe Connect? Create customisable, reusable and secure virtual experiences as engaging as real-life interactions.

Functionality is delivered with resizable pods that can be positioned on the screen by the host, who determines what everyone will experience at any time. Design interactive storyboards with customised layouts.

Adobe Connect rooms can be used as a canvas to set up your content according to your style and goals.

ESSI Money Game - students compete nationally for cash prizes!

I found this fantastic online resource for teaching financial literacy. It's already perfectly mapped to Australian Curriculum. Content is laid out logically, quizzes are online, results feedback immediately to both teacher and student, students compete in the Money Game, so the buy-in highly engaging. Easy planning for a finance unit. I'm using it fairly basically for Year 8 this year, but it will be even better when this content is revisited in Years 9 and 10, at a deeper level. I used this online program to plan an problem-based, authentic, real-life learning unit, for Year 8 Financial Literacy unit, for my next praxis. Students had to choose a fundraising goal (their problem) - usually travel expenses for an upcoming sporting competition - and strategise how they would achieve their goals, in a set time frame.

If you're not sure what digital pedagogy is, or how to start thinking about it, this video is an excellent place to start. As a teacher you will find that it addresses the concerns you've been having about the barriers to your students' learning, and provides realistic, 21st century solutions. I have personally found digital pedagogy to be the missing link between "vanilla" lesson plans and assessments, and authentic and engaging learning for my students (and fun for me to teach as well!).

As teachers working under Australia’s strict data security laws (Education Queensland, 2022; Macquarie Government, 2023), we can only use programs where the data is stored in Australia and accessed only by Australians. There are severe penalties for schools who breach these requirements. At my first praxis school, a teacher was reprimanded for using Class Dojo because the data is stored in the states. Despite the students and parents loving the wonderful communication experiences, it was shut down.

Secondly, there are strict prohibitions against our students using 3rd party software, as I learned the hard way on my last praxis. Without parent signed consent, students cannot even use Kahoots or the online mind mapping software I had written into my lesson plans, let alone the editing software they needed for their projects. I had to reteach those lessons with paper and coloured pens, scissors and glue. The students loved these kinaesthetic, non-device activities because they already spend hours at school and at home on their laptops, or staring at other screens.

References:
Education Queensland.

Doodly allows you to design automated hand drawn presentations - yep those cool cartoony videos. I'm on the fence about Doodly because I have tried it and found it very difficult to use, but, maybe I just need to spend more time on it.

I think students will find hand drawn presentations very engaging. I sometimes find engaging videos but the content isn't quite right, so this would work well for my teaching needs. It is very expensive though, so for now, it's going on my "to try again later" shelf.

Update: Now that I know I don't have to be an expert at something to try it in my classroom, I'm going to assign a lesson for students to practice using it and learn Doodly from each other. They will have greater success than I could alone and I'm looking forward to learning from them. (Ah it's still expensive - so back on the shelf for now).

While I had originally dismissed Instagram as an assessment communication platform for student safety reasons and because I can’t stand the platform myself 😆 #growthmindset, I was determined to look into it because “blending” or “flow” is TPCK best practice for implementing ICTs in the classroom – bringing ICTs that students use and are familiar with in home settings into the classroom (Bulfin & North, 2007; Lai et al., 2013; Hunter, 2019; Puentedara, R, 2009).

Further research into Instagram’s privacy settings, I found it to be the safest program for students to use, under a class account (rather than using student names or logins). Instagram offers the option of private accounts, where viewing access is only to approved users and they can’t share or edit, in this case, parents, students and experts I permit. The school is deidentified and students can use nom de plumes.

Use it in tandem with Mojo for bringing posts to life with photostories.

Check out my full write up on using Instagram in the classroom here.

References:

Bulfin, S., & North, S.

OneNote is a great starter learning management system (LMS). You don't need to lug around 30 exercise books per class to collect evidence of learning or marking and providing feedback. It has great collaborative spaces, and immersive readers with settings for low literacy, students with dyslexia or Irlen's etc. It connects with Teams and all Microsoft apps. You can read my full write up here.

It can be overwhelming to risk assess all the technologies we want to use in our classrooms as teachers. We also have many topics to cover with our students – how to evaluate sources for quality of information, how to ensure consent and copyright – to name just a few. The Australian Curriculum’s Digital Literacy Requirements (ACARA, 2023) can help with a comprehensive checklist with each technology we want to use. The Digital Literacy learning continuum is organised into the above 4 elements. ACARA goes into a lot more detail than I can fit in this post, so I highly recommend familiarising yourself with that part of the website.

ACARA.

Dr Ruben Puentedura’s SAMR model is a framework that can be used by educators to analyse how effectively they have integrated technology into their teaching, by rating that technology into four categories: Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition.

Substitution and augmentation refer to implementing technology in ways that enhance your lessons, whereas modification and redefinition completely transform your lessons. This differentiation is important because although just enhancing our lessons may be the best option for a certain learning activity, how often have we really pushed the boundaries of what’s possible? Thanks to new technologies, we can transform our assessment tasks and learning activities into previously inconceivable new creations (Bloom, 1956).

Reference:
Puentedura, R.
