"I'm sorry, Maureen." "sorry for everything." - Jeannette
When they day Maureen was born Jeannette had made one of the biggest promises ever. She promised she'd take care of Maureen and protect her, but the day came when Maureen had run away from home and didn't plan on coming back. Making Jeannette completely break her promise to her. The Lion King gif represents Maureen's inner thoughts.A prime example of broken promises because a family member, Jeanette, couldn't keep her promise to another member, Maureen.

Unconditional Love

"But you always loved your old man, didn't you?" "I did, Dad," I said. "And you loved me."
The relationship between a daughter and a father is a good example of unconditional love. Jeannette loved her father throughout her entire life even after some of the terrible things she was put through because of him. She claimed to be his "number one supporter." Jeannette had always loved her dad so the picture and the quote are good ways to represent the word love.

Fantasy vs Reality

"Have I ever let you down" - Rex Walls
Rex Walls, the man who best represents fantasy. He believes that he is the best father there is. He believes that he raised his children the best he can. Little did he know his children took after themselves and he didn't have much involvement in their growth. The quote represents the irony/fantasy Rex doesn't realize he has. In reality Rex was an alcoholic, who couldn't take care of his family, and who some may consider a failure as a father.

"I had always wanted a watch. Unlike diamonds, watches were practical. They were for people on the run, people with appointments to keep and schedules to meet. That was the kind of person I wanted to be." -Jeannette
By the time she was in middle Jeannette started figuring out herself, they type of person she wanted to be when she grew up. She knew people with busy schedules would mean they have a very important and successful career. The quote and picture both show how Jeannette wanted to be someone who has a role in the world and wanted to be successful.

"You can't just live like this," I said. "Why not?" Mom said. "Being homeless is an adventure." - Rose Mary
This is a great example of non-conformity because society wouldn't think being homeless on your own choice isn't ordinary. Many people struggle to get off the streets, but they could easily pick up themselves and live properly. Instead they choose not to.

"If you don't want to sink, you better figure out how to swim." - Rex Walls
Rex was trying to teach Jeannette a very important lesson, this lesson is a good example of self-sufficiency because Rex wanted to show Jeannette that if she didn't like the spot she was in she should teach herself to get up and get out of it, not with the help with others, but instead by herself. She was able to take care of herself when her parents couldn't do it. She got a job by herself and earned money for her family and got into a college by herself as well.
