To me, animals are people and family, since I've grown up with dogs for siblings, most of them being rescues from puppy mills. Seeing the way some people treat animals makes me sad, since animals have rights and personalities just like humans do, yet so many are treated unjustly because they can't speak up for themselves. And animal rights aren't a very pressing social issue since people think governments and cities are doing enough now, but the sad truth is they aren't.
