JK Rowling, one of the world's profound and leading novelist's, is the author of the well-known "Harry Potter" series. However, the behind the scenes of the"Harry Potter" books is not as pleasant and exciting as the books seem to be to the readers.
Many folks believe that heart break and dejection has led to creativity being born before their eyes. They believe that when a person is heart broken, he or she has nothing to loose and hence he or she puts forth his best efforts into creating something unimaginable and out of the world. This creativity can be presented in the form of books, poems, paintings, sculptures, songs and several other things. This was also the formula applied by JK Rowling.
Rowling commenced documenting the famous series with the attitude, "I have nothing to loose, what's the worse that could happen to me? If I get rejected by every major publisher in the UK, big deal." She believed that this was her last chance to prove herself to the world and she took a dive for it.
JK Rowling filed for a divorce from her husband, just when her daughter, Jessica was born. She became a single mother and had nowhere to go. She was also unemployed and faced bitter poverty. Harsh circumstances and brutal life experiences provoked her to contemplate suicide. She was hopeless, her world was hopeless. It was as if all the beautiful colours of life had been drained out of her. It was if the black hole was sucking all of her energy one by one, and one day she would just fade away.
However, the thought of her daughter motivated her to live and earn a living. She did not desire her daughter to live in such horrible conditions and wanted her daughter, the apple of her eye, to have a bright future.
This is when she considered discussing her issues with a psychiatrist. Nevertheless, fate was yet not on her side. Her regular doctor was replaced by a substitute for a few weeks and she did not consider Rowling's problems 'serious.' Rowling was left with no hope, yet, she waited patiently. When her regular doctor returned, she realised the serious nature of Rowling's depression and immediately commenced her proper treatment.
Alongside her treatment, Rowling also started writing books. She had a typewriter, which she could use and she conceived the thought of Harry Potter while on a train journey from Manchester. While her daughter would sleep beside her in a café, she would write for hours at the end. There was no stopping her now.
When the first book was complete, she went to all the publishing centres in the UK and was rejected by twelve of them, before finally being accepted by a publishing house who's owner thought that it was 'worth' publishing her story. This was after a year's relentless struggle.
This was followed by more books being published, each of them becoming a bestseller. JK Rowling's dark days were over and so was her depression. Her hard work and determination had paid off.
She later on became a spokesperson and delivered motivational and inspirational speeches at countless universities and speech delivering platforms. She did not fear from mentioning her depression and was proud to have overcome it.
So, this was her life story, a rollercoaster filled with ups and downs. However, what would have happened if she had given up while visiting publishing houses for her book? What if she had given up when she had no money, no house, no husband? If she had done that, then she would have never realised the beautiful future, which lay before her and we would have never got to read the amazing Harry Potter series. This is why one lesson that is definitely learnt from her is to never give up.
Therefore, one must never get so caught up in defeat that he or she doesn't even realise when a new road might be opening up. Also, one must understand that great work is not always recognised instantly. If you have been working on a project that you dearly love and cherish, and if is not turned down by a critic or someone else, do not feel dejected and disappointed. Great things also take time. Be patient and keep trying. After all, God helps the people, who help themselves. Rejection and failure may not be easy to absorb, but if you have a rational reason to believe that what you have to offer is of value, then showing up and trying, again and again, is a critical part of any strategy for success.
To conclude, I would strongly encourage all of you to be motivated and on the drive and never give up no matter what the situation.
