  • Tom Allen, faces various conflicts in the story. First, he must survive the storm and the capsizing of the ship. He also must survive underwater in the air pocket.

  • The event that leads to the climax is when Tom and the two other crew members are trapped in the air pocket.
  • The other challenges Tom faces faced such as surviving the storm and the capsizing of the ship, have prepared him for the climax by forcing him to be alert and level-headed.
  • Tom has to make several critical choices, he must decide to grab onto a part of the ship and hold on for dear life when he is thrown around in the storm. Later, he must survive being trapped. This reveals that Tom is resourceful, level-headed, and willing to put others before himself.

  • Tom Allen feels immense relief and gratitude as he and the other two crew members are rescued by the divers. But he also feels immense anxiety and fear of his brush with death.
  • The climax changes Tom and the other characters. They have all faced the possibility of death and survived, this changes their perspective on life and gives them a new appreciation for life. They are all brought closer together and create a strong bond.

  • After the story, it is clear that Tom and the others only become stronger from this experience and keep working on fishing boats and they maintain their bonds becoming better friends. 
  • At the start of the story, the characters are working on the Liberty and facing the challenges of life at sea. The storm puts them into a life-or-death situation. The characters are faced with difficult choices and learn from their experience by becoming better at their job. One thing that remains the same is their ability to work together.
