This image shows one of the witch trials that many innocent people had to undergo if they were accused of being a witch. The women standing in the wooden box is the accused witch, the man sitting in the chair is the person questioning her, and the girl sitting in the chair next to the women is "possessed." The start of all the witch hunt trials began when "possessed" young girls accused people of being witches and possessing them. These people had to undergo trials to prove that they weren't witches, but almost all the time it didn't if they plead guilty or not, they would still be accused of being witches. If they plead guilty then they would get jailed and lose everything they had in life including family, friends, and property. If they plead not guilty then they were most likely going to be killed or jailed for life.

Puritanism was a religion in which strict moral codes and literal interpretation of the Bible were emphasized. The Puritans believed that there was a constant presence of evil straight from Satan in certain people which led them to fear witchcraft as a threat to their community. This fear began the Salem witch trials. This led to hysteria, trials, and execution. These events showed how fear and strict beliefs could lead to bad decisions and harm innocent people.

The witch hysteria in Salem started when people believed that some people in their community were witches working for the devil. Strange behaviors in a few young girls led to accusations, and fear quickly spread through the town. Many innocent people were blamed for practicing witchcraft and possessing these girls. They were put on trial and some were even executed. The hysteria ended when people realized the accusations had gone too far.

The city upon a Hill theory came from Puritan leader John Winthrop. He believed their community should be an example of pure perfection for others to follow. The Puritans in Salem thought they were chosen by God to live holy lives, and any failure would bring shame and punishment. This pressure to maintain a perfect society made them fear anything that was seen as evil, like witchcraft. The Salem witch trials happened partly because they had to get rid of anything that threatened their pure community. This beliefs led to harsh judgments and actions against anyone accused of being a witch.

Arthur Miller was a famous American play writer who wrote "The Crucible." The play was about the Salem witch trials, but it was also a way for Miller to talk about the fear and unfair accusations happening during the Red Scare. In "The Crucible," Miller shows how fear and lies can destroy a community and ruin lives. He linked this to the Red Scare. he used the Salem witch trials as a way to criticize how people were accusing others of being communists without any real proof.
