I witnessed several strategies put into play because of the school shootings. One technology center put in a series of lights that are in every lab. There are three colors of lights and they indicate different types emergencies. The blue light flashing indicates an intruder and both students and faculty are trained on what to do. There are lights outside the building to alert students and faculty entering the school. If it is blue flashing, they are instructed to leave the premisses and go to a safe place.

I have seen more drills, and in the younger grades some anxiety in the drills because they just don't understand the why and how. I have seen schools completely remodel the layout of their buildings so that the front office is able to lock down, visitor log, phone system, and classroom layouts are changed to allow hiding. I have seen one school where everyone has a can of vegetables, so they have a "weapon" to throw at an intruder.

There have been new drills, training for teachers, safety precautions at schools, as well as physical changes to the entrances of many schools due to school shootings. I do not remember growing up with varying levels of "intruder" drills. We have drills where the school is locked and no one from the outside can come in until the danger of an intruder passes. We also have the lock down drills where our classroom doors are locked and no students are allowed outside our classroom. We also have another level where the doors are locked, lights are turned off, and students hide in the classroom. This is something that has changed over the years. There are also safety changes with how guests/visitors at school sign in. ID is typically required and guests are not allowed in the building without checking in through the office, first. Finally, the physical appearance of many school entrances have changed for safety. Some entrances are glassed in and visitors are only allowed in through the main entry. I feel as if all of these changes are directly related to school shootings.
