1.    GCSE Higher group of students who have just had a learning session on substitution, with an emphasis on substituting negative numbers.

2.    This HPQ could be used at the eand of the teaching/learning session to test understanding.

3.    The HPQ would demonstrate understanding of the substitution of negatice numbers and particular answers would highlight the various misconceptions that arise with this topic.

4.    If a significant percentage of responces were correct it would be provide evidence that the students had mastered to topic, any misconceptions could be dicsussed and then the class could move onto futher learning.

5.    If a significant number of students had given incorrect responses then the topic would need further teaching and learning.
