SUSTAINABLE PLNs
It might be great to be a member of a network that provides support and collaborative problem solving but I doubt that it is sufficient in the long run.
In order for a community to grow, there must be more than inter-school interaction and on-the-spot cooperation. To my mind, a sustainable PLN should have a broader scope, i.e. the continuous professional development of its members for which it is essential to be open to international organisations beyond schools, to organise continuous affordance-based research with the collaboration of teachers and students and to be open to innovation in all spheres of life in the 21st century. A dynamic PLN might also need to engage students, their families and the local community.
My motivation for joining a PLN is learning from each other and from experts from across fields, peer observation/feedback/assessment and sharing experiences and expertise for continuous improvement and development, not just to meet our immediate classroom needs.

I agree with everyone here! There need to be constant synchronous and asynchronous teacher support in blogs, forums, chats, self-reflection activities, peer observation classes, peer feedback and assessment, mentoring and tailored courses, collaborative creation of materials and resources for teaching.
Beyond these, a PLN can organise joint research projects for ongoing improvement of practice and updating content and pedagogical teacher knowledge, and, of course, opening to horizontal and vertical cooperation across educational and non formal learning organisations.

Yes, I agree that helping teachers and getting them involved in fixing one another's problems makes joining a PLN worthwhile for educators.
