Some website-making practices are used in 80-100% of websites. Those practices become the norm, website standards. Some website standard are:

ºPlacing the logo on the top left of the homepage.
ºPlacing a navigation system such as sorting the pages into categories at the top of the homepage.
ºPlacing the value proposition above the fold at the top of the homepage. What does the company do? What does the company want consumers to know?
ºCall to action on every page. Asking the user to sign up or get a free trial or something of that sort on every page. 

Some techniques in making websites are used by 65-79% of websites. Those techniques are website best practices. Not all websites use them, but they're very good.

ºMaking sure the website design works on all sorts of devices. A laptop, an iPhone, or a tablet. The layout has to be flexible. 
ºIf the website has any social media accounts such as Instagram or twitter, then links or icons should be placed in the header or footer.
ºKeeping a search bar feature at the top of the homepage. It's important so that viewers can easily access different pages of the website.
ºThe contact information is easily accessible at the header or footer. Many people go to websites so that they can find content information, not to read through. 

Many big websites have something called website brand. This is a simple concept. Sticking with a specific set of colors. Keeping a consistent font, tone, and style.
