Core Beliefs

I believe that all students are capable of learning and are deserving of an education. Students should have access to tools and other forms of additional help and support to ensure they can learn. All students can be successful in their academic and social lives.

Role

The school counselor's role is to ensure that every student has a fair and equitable education by advocating for the student's mental, social/emotional, and physical well-being (American School Counselor Association, 2019). School counselors provide direct and indirect services through a proactive, comprehensive school counseling program that is data-driven (Mullen & Lambie, 2016). According to the American School Counselor Association, B-SMS 6, services help create an equitable learning environment that allows all students to overcome barriers that impede their learning ability (American School Counselor Association, 2019).

Ethical Standards

Ethical standards provide a guideline for school counselors by detailing the standards that should be used in the profession and that are used to create a comprehensive school counseling program per the American School Counseling Association's professional foundation section B-PF 3 (American School Counselor Association, 2019).

Vision Statement

All students are caring, inclusive, and prosperous individuals who are prepared to face life's challenges and successfully overcome them. All students can learn and succeed academically, socially, and in all their future endeavors.

References

American School Counselor Association.

Identify Surprises

One thing that surprised me was that I had a moderate automatic preference for Christianity over Judaism in my second implicit bias test. Even though I have not had much exposure to Judaism, I am aware that I have a more positive view of Judaism than Christianity, so I was not anticipating these results. It was easier for me to identify the items associated with Christianity since I had more exposure to it. There were several instances where I fumbled for a second to recognize the Jewish terms since I was less familiar with them.

Areas to Improve

I need to improve this moderate automatic preference for Christianity over Judaism. This was a higher result than my suggested weak automatic preference for transgender people over cisgender people from my first test. One way to improve this is to increase my education in Judaism. I think having a better awareness of the terms, symbols, and other aspects of the religion would help to decrease my implicit bias associated with it.
