In chapter 2 Meursault reacts to life after his mothers death. He wakes up feeling exhausted from the funeral and desires to swim. He meets Marie, a former coworker, and they go to a movie and have sex. Meursault shows indifference to his mothers passing, even confusing the day of her death with the day of her burial. Then one Sunday, he feels restless and bored without a routine, smoking in bed and wandering aimlessly. He observes the world around him but remains detached, finding pleasure in small things like the smell of Marie’s hair. Despite moments of sensitivity, he does not assign significance to his day, reflecting a life devoid of deeper meaning. Camus illustrates Meursault's mechanical existence, setting the stage for his eventual awakening to the absurdity of life.
