Two spare pants spare shoes a warm coat a sweater handkerchiefs and papa as or a night dress.Some children were so poor they didn't have a warm coat.
They also took soap a towel and a toothbrush some had never seen a toothbrush before and socks or a stocking. Food for 24 hours and if they didn't have a case they would use a pillow case instead.

Billeting officers took the children to a town hall, to be chosen by local people. They were fed and had extra rationing with milk and a can of meat . Some people were happy to have evacuees but sometimes the billeting officer had to force them to have evacuees. Girls and older boys were chosen first because the girls were pretty and happy and the boys were strong and tall and were useful. Evacuees that were left over were taken by teachers,policemen, or the billeting officer
