- Gilgamesh reveals to his mother Ninsun, his restless heart.
- Ninsun begs Shamash, the sun god, not to abandon her son, Gilgamesh. 
- Ninsun also considers Enkidu as her son.
- With the knowledge that Gilgamesh knows the wild places, the elders give Enkidu the task of being his guide. 
- Enkidu agrees to be Gilgamesh's guide.
- Gilgamesh comes to the realization that this is his destiny and with Enkidu's help, they can prevail.

- Gilgamesh knows that the only way to reach Uta-napishti is to cross the treacherous ocean. Surdri leads Gilgamesh to a boatman named Urshanabi. 
- Urshanabi tells Gilgamesh that he destroyed the only way across the ocean but together they tied poles to ferry across the water. 
- Gilgamesh finds Uta-napishti and told him about Enkidu and about his journey to find the old man. 
- Uta-napishti tells Gilgamesh to stop chasing sorrow and that the gods have established life and death.
