Children involvement in the activity.

Yes,the children are involved,absorbed and interacting with the activity.They listened carefully as the caregiver was giving instructions.They took part as the caregiver was demonstrating.After sliding with the caregiver for some turns,they are seen doing it independently and happily.They are not seen diverting attention to something else.They are all sliding down the hill with the sleds and climbing up the hill holding them with their hands.The older children are helping the younger ones to slide.They need minimum help to do the activity.It’s fun.

How much can the children do for themselves and how much is done for them?

The children (toddlers/ preschoolers )seem be doing most of the sliding down without help but struggle climbing back up the hill due to the slippery of the hill.This is shown by seeing one of the instructor holding a child’s hand coming up the hill. They also need help by balancing or holding the sled before sliding down. This due to the position where they are starting at a slight slope may cause one to slide down before they are safely positioned on the sled. This is shown when the educator is holding the sled while the second child climbs and holds on to the one in the front. Infants needs more assistance climbing on the sled and sliding down. Because of their age the educators are sliding down with them.

When observing children in my daycare,setting one key concern is to notice if they are involved ,absorbed,and interacting with activity,

1. Through observation i can tell that children are involved through focus and concentration eg watching kindly and closely,the try to repeat my actions.

2.They use hands, eyes, and body to explore materials and photos .

3. talk about what they are doing.

4.Stay with the activity for a period of time. They smile ,laugh, show interest and make me know they enjoying the activity.

5 HOW CAN YOU TELL. Engaged children often ask questions try new things and interact with friends and educators during activities.these signs help me understand the activity is developmental. GLORY

Yes the children seem to be safe and engaged in this activity. They are save because there are multiple adults around and other kids. They are dressed appropriately for the cold weather. The hill they slid down wasn’t so steep and was safe to slid down. Good safe landing on the bottom no rocks around them. They were engaged because they were happy to go sliding. They wanted to have multiple turns going down the hill on seal skin, none of the kids seemed distracted and no one wanted to leave. They were happy to be sliding together.

Based on the photo, No! The child is not engaged and secure.

The child is sitting and fully dressed appropriately but she seems not interested or not ready to do the sliding activity. The posture of the body is not safe and secure for an active play. Some children are very cautious, it takes a while for them to warm up. With this, childcare providers need to provide the initial support such as getting them ready, encouragement and modelling to them on how to play safely. It is also important to justify their emotions (scared) but give an assurance so they can fully participate and enjoy the activity.

In this picture they just need a little help. They need help to make sure that they are secure sitting down when they slide so that they will not fall. The rest they can do it themselves.After they slide, they can climb back on their own.

In this image the child are involved, absorbed and interacting with the activity, She look happy together with her educator and sitting closely on a sled and holding on while playing in the snow. The facial expressions you can tell that they having fun. It shows she is physically and emotionally involved in the activity.
