I just have a really hard time with the phrase culturally competent (even though I strongly support the idea you are trying to convey). I don't think you get to check a box and say I am competent in someone else's culture. I would argue that this sentence could say "Supported by a foundation in basic science, evidence-based practice, and One Health principles, they have the ability to critically evaluate information to make sound clinical decisions for each animal/herd in the context of their indivudal circumstances. <s>in a culturally competent manner</s>"

Beautifully written definition. Not sure this is included in the definition per say, but from a rural vet perspective a couple of considerations:

1) Considering spectrum of care and ability to work within clients' financial and emotional resources

2) An understanding and appreciation of companion animals, food production animals, and equine, even if students do not wish to pursue any work with certain species.

There should be an understanding of basic leadership and supervisory roles. Most practices have technical help that needs to be supervised. Even the receptionists need direction from the veterinarian when it comes to scheduling.

What does culturally competent mean? Each practice’s culture? Or society in general? Each practice has its own culture. And we are all human. We need to be kind to everyone. Regardless of their “culture” Statement should say in a “Professionally Competent Manner”

Along with leadership skills it is important that they understand how to direct a team while managing and handling a moderate case load. They also need the efficiency to carry out that case load in a timely fashion. Being kind to everyone always is a must, no matter the culture of the doctor or client.

I agree with the adjustment of the statement from "in a culturally competent manner" to something like "in the context of individual circumstances". They'll need to make sound clinical decisions and do their best (be creative) to help the patient when client has little to no money (and they'll need to understand the client may truly be at a place of either buying food for the kids and keeping the heat on at home, or treating the animal to the gold standard, and they need to understand that individual circumstances sometimes dictate the gold standard is not chosen).
