If + Present Simple,... Present Simple.
Another type of sentences in the zero conditional are sentences in which we talk about permanent or repetitive actions and statements that are always true.
In both parts of the sentence we use the verb in the tense Present Simple.

Examples:
1. If people are happy themselves, they are nice to other people.
2. If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils.
3. Whenever I eat too much chocolate, I get sick.
4. My boss gets angry if I'm late for work.

 The 'if' in this conditional can usually be replaced by 'when' without changing the meaning.

Examples:
1. When it rains, tennis lessons are held in the gym.
If it rains, tennis lessons are held in the gym.
2. When John is out of the office, I take his calls.
If John is out of the office, I take his calls.

We use the first conditional when we talk about future situations we believe are real or possible.



If it doesn't rain tomorrow, we'll go to the beach.
 Arsenal will be top of the league if they win.
 When I finish work, I'll call you.



In first conditional sentences, the structure is usually: if/when + present simple >> will + infinitive. 



It is also common to use this structure with unless, as long as, as soon as or in case instead of if.



I'll leave as soon as the babysitter arrives.
 I don't want to stay in London unless I get a well-paid job.
 I'll give you a key in case I'm not at home.
 You can go to the party, as long as you're back by mid

If + past + would + verb

Meaning
Second conditional is used in situations/actions in the present or future which are not likely to happen or are imaginary, hypothetical or impossible.

  • If I won the lottery, I would travel around the world and buy a castle.
I think it is very unlikely that I will win the lottery. However, in this unlikely condition, I will travel and buy a castle.

  • If I wasn’t watching TV now, I would be playing football.
I am watching TV, but I am imagining an alternative activity I would be doing if I wasn’t watching TV.

  • If I were an alien, I would be able to travel around the universe.
It is impossible for me to be an alien. However, I am imagining what I would do in this situation

  • if + past perfect, ...would + have + past participle

It talks about the past. It's used to describe a situation that didn't happen, and to imagine the result of this situation.


  • If we had taken a taxi, we wouldn't have missed the plane
  • She wouldn't have been tired if she had gone to bed earlier
  • She would have become a teacher if she had gone to university
  • He would have been on time for the interview if he had left the house at nine
