In traditional Korean culture, boys are often privileged over girls. I saw this happen a lot when I visited my relatives as a child. My aunt would serve food to the my uncles and even my 8-year-old nephew before the women. When I talked to my parents about this, they agreed that this was an unfair and outdated tradition. I decided that I would teach my own children differently in the future.

Growing up most people I met would assume I'm white and grew up with 2 white parents. My dad is white and was born and raised in Queens New York. My dad grew up there and spoke English since his first words. My mom however, was born in a very tiny country in South America called, Uruguay. My mom grew up speaking Spanish since her first words. spent 12 years of her life there until she moved to the U.S. My dad had straight hair, while my mom had curly hair. My dad could speak English fluently while my mom had to learn. My dad grew up middle class while my mom grew up poor. My parents lived totally differently. My mom never taught my siblings and I Spanish, out of respect for my dad who didn't know the language. My dad loves my mom's Latino side and makes sure we know to be proud of it. My mom loves my dad's side and always taught us that her side of her family isn't the only family we can go to for help and that we are lucky both sides of our family love each other. My mother is stricter about things while my dad is more laid back but won't hesitate to defend her when she needs him. My Heritage and family mean a lot to me and i hope to be like my parents one day
