Public sector organisations are owned and controlled by the government. Their primary objective is to meet the public's needs and provide them with essential services including transportation and healthcare rather than focusing on profit. In the travel and tourism industry, public sectors work to encourage both domestic and international tourists, contributing to the growth of the tourism sector. They play a vital role in supporting communities and promoting destinations. Examples of public sectors include local tourism departments and national tourism boards such as VisitBritain, which I will be researching.

VisitBritain's main source of revenue comes from the government, primarily through the department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). This public funding supports the agency's work in promoting Britain as a top tourist destination. VisitBritain also generates income through retail activities like the VisitBritain shop where visitors can book travel tickets that suits their own needs. It further benefits from collaborations with international and industry partners who contribute to their marketing campaigns. Additionally, these funding sources motivate VisitBritain's tourism-related campaigns and projects which as a result has had a major influence on the UK as international tourists have boosted the economy by "£562 million in 2024/25."

The voluntary sector in travel and tourism is made up of non-profit organisations that exist not to generate profit, but to fulfil social, cultural, or environmental aims. These organisations are typically funded through a combination of membership fees, public donations, grants, and community fundraising, allowing them to reinvest all income into their mission. A leading example within this sector is the National Trust, one of the UK’s largest conservation charities. The Trust plays a vital role in preserving historic houses, gardens, and landscapes, while promoting sustainable tourism and protecting natural environments for future generations. Relying on both paid employees and a large network of dedicated volunteers, the National Trust demonstrates how the voluntary sector supports responsible tourism, heritage protection, and meaningful visitor experiences.

Ownership in the voluntary sector for travel and tourism is fundamentally non-profit, with organisations such as charities and trusts operating without private owners or shareholders. the National Trust, which is governed by a board of trustees rather than individuals seeking financial gain. All income—whether from membership fees, donations, grants, or on-site sales—is reinvested directly into conserving historic sites, natural landscapes, and cultural heritage. This structure contrasts sharply with the private sector, where businesses like theme parks and hotels are owned by individuals or shareholders who expect a financial return, and with the public sector, where attractions and services are owned and funded by the government. Unlike these profit-driven or state-controlled models, the National Trust demonstrates how voluntary-sector ownership prioritises long-term preservation, public benefit, and sustainable tourism over financial profit.

In the UK’s private sector, ownership usually means that individuals or private companies are in charge of businesses, not the government. These owners make the decisions about how the business runs, what to sell, and how to grow, all with the goal of making a profit. Because they have control, they can be creative and take risks to improve their business. This kind of ownership helps encourage new ideas and investment since the owners directly benefit when their business does well. It’s different from public sector businesses, where the government is the one in control.

TUI’s sources of revenue come from several key areas within the travel and tourism industry. One of the biggest sources is package holidays, where customers pay for a combination of flights, accommodation, and sometimes transfers or activities all bundled together. This is popular because it offers convenience and often better prices. They also earn money from selling flights separately, both on scheduled routes and charter services. Another important revenue stream is from hotel bookings, as TUI owns or partners with many hotels and resorts around the world, earning income from guests staying there. Cruises are another significant source, with TUI operating its own cruise lines and offering packages that include onboard services and excursions. Additionally, TUI generates revenue from other travel-related services like car rentals, travel insurance, and excursions or tours booked through their platform. They also benefit financially from online bookings through their website and apps, which have become increasingly important as more travelers prefer to plan and book trips digitally. Overall, TUI’s diverse revenue sources help them maintain a strong business by catering to many different travel needs and preferences.

TUI works with a variety of other organisations to strengthen its business and improve the travel experience for customers. It partners with airlines, both its own and external carriers, to provide reliable flight options. TUI also collaborates with hotel chains and local accommodation providers to offer a wide range of places to stay. The company often teams up with cruise operators to expand its holiday packages. Beyond the travel industry, TUI engages with environmental organisations to support sustainability initiatives and promote responsible tourism. It also works with government agencies and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with travel laws and safety standards. Additionally, TUI cooperates with travel agents and online booking platforms to reach more customers and make booking easier. These collaborations help TUI deliver high-quality travel services.
