In general, research supports the idea that people feel good when they feel they are making an impact with their money in a personal way and a sense of shame when they are stingy.” (3)

Life is made out of ups and downs, we wouldn't be able to grow with out them, so a key to happiness is to be okay with not being okay sometimes. You have to have those bad days to be able to fully appreciate the good ones. Buy things in an effort to cheer yourself up is actually counter productive. You'll train yourself to make a large purchase every time you feel down and when you get used to it that momentary happiness will fade and you'll start the cycle over and over again until you have no money left.

The American novel The Great Gatsby, written by F Scott Fitzgerald,is a fantastic example of how more money does not always equivalent to more happiness. “... as well as being a tragic romance, it's also a prose-poem, an elegy to its author's lost love, a hymn to the anxieties of the American dream, and a jazz riff on postwar trauma.” (Robert McCrum, theguardian.com).

Gatsby thought that if he had money then he would be able to make Daisy happy and therefor he would become happier. He thought that since Daisy had married money that was what she was going to notice. He bought a grand house even though he was the only one living there, he had a fancy car even though he rarely left his house and when he did it was to go into the city where he mostly walked to place to place, he had a big pool but didn’t even use it the entire summer, and he threw huge parties but most of the people didn’t even know who he was or what he looked like. He had all of this wealth but when he died no one seemed to have the time to spend to attend his funeral. He died alone for no reason and no one except his father (who he hadn’t seen in a long while) and Nick were there to see his body off to it’s final resting place.

Gatsby thought that the key to solving all of his life problems was procuring more and more money. He thought that the fame, fortune and popularity was all he needed to gain the affections of Daisy and the respect of the other men and women he interacted with. However he was met with the sad truth that tells us that money doesn't fix everything. The popularity and "friends" he had via his lavish frivolous parties were about as real and tangible as the late night mist over the water. The unfortunate truth is that there will be those people who only see you for what you have and not what you are. These are not the kind of people you should be surrounding yourself with. People with these leech-like traits are more likely to drive the people who genuinely care about you away before leaving you themselves once they find someone that is bright shiny and new.
