Anthony LeminMrs. SentalLanguage Arts 3December 5,2016Courage	While reading “The Outsiders”, S.E Hinton makes it clear that one of the many themes in the story is courage. One big example of courage was when Johnny killed bob when Ponyboy was drowning. Johnny reacted by saying “I had to. They were drowning you, Pony. They might have killed you. And they had a blade …”(Hinton 57). Johnny was showing great courage by besides just sitting there and getting threatened by Bob and watching Ponyboy drowning to death, he reacted quickly and saved Ponyboy’s life. Even though he killed Bob, Davis still got scared and ran away. Therefore, Johnny was very courageous for saving Ponyboy’s life.

In the novel, The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton, we learn that when people grow up they become more mature. Some people in the novel have to take care of others and are the oldest. For example, Darry and Dally had to grow up fast. Darry has to take care of his brothers a bit and make most of the money since both the mom and dad died. A lot of kids or adults know of the saying, “growing up comes with responsibility”. Darry has to take care of Soda and Ponyboy and more towards the end has gotten more responsible for Pony. Darry was yelling at Ponyboy than after, “Darry didn't deserve to work like an old man when he was only twenty. He had been a real popular guy in school; he was the captain of the football team and he had been voted Boy of the Year. But we just didn't have the money for him to go to college, even with the athletic scholarship he won. And now he didn't have time between jobs to even think about college”(Hinton 16). Also Dally didn't get a education and grew up fast but was always in crime. Dally didn't have much of a point in life after Johnny died too cause it was the only thing he loved. So Dally had it really rough. All the boys help eachother in life. Darry through the years had it the rough taking care of Soda and Pony with his jobs. All in all, Darry, Dally and some other characters in The Outsiders experienced, “growing up coming with responsibility” more than others.

Erica Luzzi, Mrs. Sental, Language Arts 3, December 5, 2016, Choice In the novel "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton, we learn that choosing wisely makes an impact on any outcome, in any situation. Some of the characters in the novel show that making the right or wrong choice makes a very big impact on what happens in their life. For example, Johnny and Ponyboy chose to go save the children from the fire in the church. If they hadn’t gone and saved the children they could have died, but if they would have just stayed in Dally’s car they could have avoided getting severely injured, and in Johnny’s case dying. Though they both felt like they had to when Ponyboy says, “ I’ll get them don’t worry!” I started at a deal run for the church, and the man caught my arm. “ I’ll get them. You kids stay out!” “ I jerked loose and ran on.” “Hey Ponyboy.” “ I looked around startled. I hadn’t realized Johnny had been right behind me the whole time.” ( Hinton 91-92). Ponyboy and Johnny chose to get the kids instead of watching, Ponyboy did not even listen to the man he went right in with Johnny right behind him. They chose to do this because they love to help people, especially Johnny. All in all, Johnny, Ponyboy, and others show that it is very important to make the right choice because it could impact anyone’s life greatly.

Francesca Veltri, Mrs. Sental, Language Arts Period 3, December 5, 2016 In the novel, The Outsiders by S. E Hinton, we learn that anyone can be seen as a hero no matter what they look like, act like, and live like. For example, Greasers in the novel, are mostly known as “trouble” and don’t really show any hero like actions throughout the novel. Although, when Johnny and Ponyboy went into the church to rescue the children they weren't seen as “hoodlums” or “trouble”. The young children’s teacher said to Pony about the three boys (Pony, Johnny and Darry) “Mrs.O’Briant and I think you were sent straight from heaven. Or are you just professional heros or something?” (Hinton 95). Ponyboy is simply surprised by what the teacher had said to him. He was a Greaser and he knew that, and many people did not think of greasers as “heroes” or people “sent from heaven”. So for a Greaser to hear someone say he is a hero and sent from heaven is unusual and surprising. All in all, anyone that is different from others can be at the same level as everyone else and be able to become a hero.

For example, Ponyboy and Johnny were in the lot when the Soc’s pulled up and started to walk towards them. David started to drown Ponyboy in the water fountain and Johnny was watching the incident happen, and had to think fast before Ponyboy lost his breath. So he took out one of his switchblades and stabbed bob to his death. All the other Soc’s ran away afraid of what was to come next, Ponyboy was okay but Johnny was terrified. At that moment Johnny knew he did something terribly wrong, but Johnny killed him so that his friend could stay alive. Even though their could have been another way to settle the problem, Johnny didn’t want Ponyboy to die. This was because Ponyboy is a Greaser and friend, he needed help and he got help from Johnny. This shows that Johnny is loyal to his gang, and he will kill someone to help the other survive.

Hinton. In The Outsiders, the Greasers always get beat up by the Socs, “Greasers can’t walk alone too much or they’ll get jumped” (Hinton 2). Greasers should be able to walk alone without getting “jumped” or beat up by the Socs. Violence is very unsafe and against the law. Violence can result in death or serious injuries. Violence is also crime, it is called asalt. All in all, as we see in The Outsiders, Johnny lost his life due to unnecessary violence.

For example, if people heard someone say “greasers”, they would automatically think that the greasers are bad people that just want to start trouble. But Ponyboy and Johnny proved them all wrong when they went back into the burning church to save the kids lives. After that, everyone thought of them as heroes. You can tell that everyone is proud of them when their teacher says, “Mrs. O’Briant and I think you were sent straight from heaven. Or are you just professional heroes or something?” (Hinton 95). It was not common for the greasers to get complimented for what they do, so that is why Pony and Johnny were both so surprised. All in all, being a hero is possible for anyone, just like how S.E Hinton showed in the novel The Greasers.

Hinton sticking together is a topic mainly showed in most of the story. For Ponyboy and all of the Greasers, they have to follow that rule. This theme is shown through most of the story because the Greasers stay together as a team. For example Ponyboy states, “ Us greasers usually stick together” (Hinton 29). The gang only have each other and their job is to stick together. The greasers have had a hard life especially some of them; meaning they would stay together and be a family. Hinton we learn, you get old quickly so enjoy being young while it lasts. Darry, Ponyboy, and Sodapop’s parents died in a car crash, which forces Darry to grow up too fast and be a parent and a role model to Pony and Soda. Pony said in regards to Darry, “Darry didn't deserve to work like an old man when he was only twenty. He had been a real popular guy in school; he was the captain of the football team and he had been voted Boy of the Year. But we just didn't have the money for him to go to college, even with the athletic scholarship he won. And now he didn't have time between jobs to even think about college”(Hinton 16). Pony thinks that Darry doesn’t deserve what has happened. He thought this because Darry had a good life and almost everything he wanted until their parents died and he had to become a parent.

Brayden ortizMrs.sentalPeriod 312/3/16 In the novel the outsider by S.E. hinton shows themes. Themes are things that describe settings, people and objects. In the novel an example of a theme is ponyboy. It describes ponyboy in a unique way.it says that ponyboy is apart of the greaser and his two brother are too.He thinks he is a very cool person. His parents died in a fatal car accident.so the only thing he has is his two brother darry the oldest and the most responsoble and sodapop the middle which talks to every girl. Darry the oldest wants the best for his two brother.in the story it decribes ponyboy by saying he is always with the greasers and also he is a greaser him self. He tries as hard as he could to be the coolest of the greaser and tries as hard as he could not to get jump.I was surprised in the book by how people died and how ponyboy got jumped by the socs by how innocent he was but he still got jumped and almost got his haircut with a switchblade. Also he got drowned in the water by bob.

Amanda Gaffney Mrs.SentalLanguage arts period 3December 5, 2016In the novel “the outsiders” there is a lot of loyalty throughout the story. There is a gang called the greasers and they are all very close, loyal to each other, and care about each other. In the novel ponyboy says “if you don't stick up for them, stick together, make like brothers, it isn't a gang anymore” (Hintion 24). This means they are loyal to each other no matter what and they will do anything for each other no matter what the other person did. All in all, there is a lot of loyalty throughout the novel “the outsiders”.
