Hey bloggers! Today I started reading “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky. When I was trying to pick a book yesterday, I was wavering between “The Color Purple” by Alice Walker and “The Stranger” by Albert Camus.
It was a tough decision. But, I ultimately decided to choose this book because it is one I’ve read before, so I knew I would enjoy it. The genre of my book is realistic fiction, another book written by Chbosky is “Imaginary Friend” which is a horror story, quite a contrast to pobaw. I would say this book is considered a classic because it’s highly recommended by readers and it is a lit circle book here at North. This has been made into a movie but I do not like the movie at all. I feel the characters were not casted correctly and it wasn’t true to the book. So far, I love it! Here is a quick summary of what I have read so far, Charlie has started to write letters to an anonymous person after his close friend Michael shot himself. He writes about his summer after losing Michael and beginning high school, he writes about what he observes in his home and past memories like when his father hid his tears while watching the last episode of “M*A*S*H” or when his sister was hit by her boyfriend. I’m super excited to continue to read this because I can see it from a new lens this time around! :)

Today we watched a short film called “Validation”. After watching it, I couldn’t help thinking that the film reminded me of my book I’m reading, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”! On page 33 the main character, Charlie, says “‘I feel infinite’” and the chapters, Sam and Patrick, reacted “…looked at me like I said the greatest thing they ever heard.” Him saying that made them smile and feel better, he made them feel like they were in their ‘glory days’. On page 52 Charlie says, “Maybe these are my glory days, and I’m not realizing it because they don’t involve a ball.” This short film also reminded me of the song Photograph by Ed Sheeran. The lyrics to the song say, “We made these memories for ourselves…And time’s forever frozen still”. It reminds me of how the whole film included photographs and that’s how they found each other again.

Today I went to this fun museum and saw a ton of cool pieces. My favorite would have to be “Wild nights-Wild nights!” by Emily Dickinson. This poem shows that love and happiness are created by those who want it, devote yourself to those you love and you will receive good things. It really stood out to me because I dint understand anything it was saying the first time I read it. I also liked that the poet focused on the lovers devotion to each other. Overall, I really liked all the pieces! I’m so glad Mr. Knuth and Ms. Miller set this up for me!!!

Identity Crisis-The Perks of Being a Wallflower

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky is a realistic fiction novel about a high school freshman named Charlie. His conflict is that his only friend Michael had commited suicide the previous year and because of it, Charlie had been held back a grade. He had no friends going into his freshman year until he meets Patrick and his step-sister, Sam. Charlie constantly questions everything throughout the book, his biggest struggle he faced in the book was when him and Sam were being sexual with eachother and Charlie started to have flashbacks to when he was a kid. His beloved Aunt Helen had molested him when she used to babysit him and his siblings.

A major part of the book is when Charlie attended a NYE party with Sam and Patrick. At the party Charlie tried LSD for the first time, when everyone was asleep he went for a walk where he passed out in the snow naked, he woke up in the hospital surrounded by his family. Chbosky dramatized the scene by using imagery and oxymorons to describe the event, “I kept quiet and looked around. And I noticed things. The dots on the ceiling. Or how the blanket the gave me was rough. Or how the doctor’s face looked rubbery. Or how everything was a deafening whisper, when he said that maybe I should start seeing a psychiatrist again. It was the first time a doctor ever told that to my parents with me in the room. And his coat was so white. And I was so tired”(pg. 99).

Charlie is a very relatable character, hes a high school student who is navigating love, drugs, etc. I personally relate to him a lot because of the way he thinks and the experiences he’s had. I have experienced an identity crisis, it was around my freshman year just like Charlie. This book reminds me of any “coming of age” story, but more in depth. Most stories are third person, from some unknown presence. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is from a known perspective, Charlie’s.
