James Patrick Henry is trying to explain that since all the men are stereotyping each other, it will lead to them not even trying benefit themselves. He is showing this by saying in the first stanza that, "Six men trapped by circumstance in bleak and bitter cold
Each one possessed a stick of wood, or so the story’s told.
The dying fire in need of logs, the first man held his back
Because of faces ’round the fire, he noticed one was black". Also the last stanza which says, "Their logs held tight in death’s still hands was proof of human
sin, They didn’t die from cold without, they died from the cold
within."

Maya Angelou is explaining to everyone she meets that she is a black women and a member of society. She is showing that even when she was struggling she rose. She is relating the life of her ancestors to her life saying that even when people are being ignorant, she is still rising from that; she is the bigger person. I know this because in the last stanza it says, "Leaving behind nights of terror and fear

I rise

Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear

I rise

Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,

I am the dream and the hope of the slave.

I rise

I rise

I rise."

The songwriter Arlissa, is trying to explain that hate and love are in the world and we as people need to fight back against racism but, do it one step at a time. Even when those activists are gone, you don't keep trying to make there be a change in the world. One of Arlissa's lyrics say that, "Won't be quiet anymore
Not unless they hear us loud and clear
Damage can't be undone
Let's not pretend it disappears
We need a change, oh yeah". This shows that we shouldn't be "quiet" about such a big situation in society and hope, with the help of others to make a change.

Song 2: Glory

John Legend and Common are trying to explain to people listening to this song that there is a war going on all around the world and that war is discrimination and when we finally win that war, there will be rejoicing. Leading to the "war" we all will fight for our rights and won't let them be taken away from us. I know this because in one of the song lyrics, it says, "Hands to the Heavens, no man, no weapon
Formed against, yes glory is destined
Every day women and men become legends
Sins that go against our skin become blessings
The movement is a rhythm to us
Freedom is like religion to us
Justice is juxtapositionin' us
Justice for all just ain't specific enough
One son died, his spirit is revisitin' us
Truant livin' livin' in us, resistance is us
That's why Rosa sat on the bus
That's why we walk through Ferguson with our hands up
When it go down we woman and man up
They say, "Stay down", and we stand up". Another reason is this song lyric that says, "One day when the glory comes
It will be ours, it will be ours
Oh one day when the war is won
We will be sure, we will be sure
Oh glory (Glory, glory)
Oh (Glory, glory)".

The artist Damon Davis and activist Michael Skolnik, wanted to explain to anyone looking at their art that because police violence is something in the world, they want people to know that their art is an example that everyone is equal even if a different skin color but also that there is activism in the world. I know this because in the painting there isn't just one type of skin color on the hands. There are many different types, which shows that Davis and Skolnik want to uplift people and that they are apart of the racial justice movement.

The feeling this portrait creates is powerful. I know this because there are many people who really idolize the Obama family and think it is cool to see one of the most important people in society in such a beautiful painting.

Ms. Omar wanted to tell people that since she is a woman of color, she went through a lot of stuff and people have tried to make her into a bad person but that didn't stop her from achieving her dream. I know this because in her post she said that, "It’s being building since my early days as an organizer... I fought for my seat at the table & will use it to fight a more peaceful world"! She used one of Langston Hughes' sayings from the poem, "I too". IIhan was trying to say that she was used to all of the hate and didn't care anymore. She wanted to make a change and kept trying till she got to achieve her dream.

Maya Angelou is trying to say that there are problems in the world that are hard to fix. But when you are determined to face those problems, you will not have to go through them again because you have tried to make a difference. I know this because the quote said that "But if face with courage need not be lived again". To me that would mean fighting for what you think is right and most importantly, doing it for the benefit of everyone.

Art/Poetry 2: Let America be America gain

Langston Hughes is trying to tell his readers that America isn't America anymore. It's not the dream it was meant to be. He is also saying that for him this "homeland of free' wasn't free to him and there were no equal rights for him and African Americans. I know this because Mr. Hughes doesn't seem agree in what America is. Mr. Hughes wants America to be equal and confused on how it isn't since there are people who have worked hard to be there. Evidence is in stanza #10 and it says, "O, let America be America again
The land that never has been yet
And yet must be—the land where every man is free.
The land that’s mine—the poor man’s, Indian’s, Negro’s, ME—
Who made America,
Whose sweat and blood, whose faith and pain,
Whose hand at the foundry, whose plow in the rain,
Must bring back our mighty dream again".
