I like to get good grades and read, I enjoy playing sports and I love to sing and dance and draw. I am outgoing, quite loud, and very funny but I also enjoy me time. Even though I’m always up for trying new things and new experiences, I like to do it with friends rather than alone because I like support from others. I have always been a carefree person, I like achieving balance and always try to live life to the fullest. I am relaxed, take things as they come, and always aspire to live a life full of happiness.

My identity is a Filipina who lives in Vancouver that enjoys singing, playing sports and reading. Our identity is defined by others through media, groups and communities we are part of, our work or profession or school, our appearance, and the way we dress up. If you aren’t wearing Nike or Adidas and you are wearing Reebok, you might not be considered cool and people might tease you about it.  Or if you have a nice instagram feed, you seem artistic. My identity to others is I am a girl who loves to praise God and likes to take pictures and videos of everything that happens in my life.

Social surroundings can have a tremendous impact on how we perceive ourselves. All around the world, we are constantly bombarded with messages about what our lives should be like.  We see advertisements and TV shows that seem to show us what “normal” people’s lives are like. In these ways and many others, our surroundings can help to create our self-identity. Many magazines contradict themselves saying that you should “Accept yourself as you are” on page 14, “How to lose 4 kgs in 1 week” on page 15, and on page 16 “Best Cake Recipe”. In today's competitive world, we unfortunately tend to judge people by grades, professionals by salary, women by beauty. Anybody who is consistently judged by their peers tend to think of him/herself as superior to others, while others may tend to suffer inferiority.  I think you shouldn’t listen to what magazines/TV/ commercials say because you should be happy with yourself and only trying to make yourself better. Pressures from society may restrict you from doing things you may not like because you are conscious of how society will react and we fear of being judged.

Is it from birth; or for how long you lived there; or is it the city/country that most likely meets other expectations about you, like when a person’s accent doesn’t match the accent where they are living? To me being from a place means the place that made you YOU, even if it is not where you are “from.”  Home is where you should feel safe, connected, understood and loved. The more present and engaged you are to yourself and the world around you, the easier you feel at home. I think home is simply wherever you’re surrounded by people who love you. To me home is Vancouver. I was born in the Philippines and moved to Canada when I was 4 so I spent most of my life here. I have grown accustomed to the the city life and now I can’t imagine living in a rural area. Vancouver has given me many opportunities that have changed my life and that I will always be thankful for.

Fortunately for me, I was raised in a very Filipino family and grew up in a community with many filipinos I never had to worry about being judged for the way I talk and foods I eat but for others they might not of been as lucky as me. But, I have watched and read many stories of people who were bullied because of their ethnicity. Differences in social rules, language, dress, and religious practices may contribute to bullies’ views of victims as strange or weak. These differences can lead to students being less accepted by their peers, having less friends from other cultures, and feeling isolated or lonely. In many cases children may start bullying other children simply because they don’t understand that it is wrong to pick on others who are different from them. A number of cultural aspects influence the way we interact with other people, including national culture, gender culture, corporate culture and various communication styles. All these elements influence; how we conduct work, our behavior and style, our use of language, how we solve challenges, problems, and conflicts, how we negotiate and how we go about creating relationships.
