I have a current sophomore who would like to graduate early and become a pilot at the Air force Academy. I am usually weary about children graduating early but after picking his brain as to reasons why, I thought it was a great idea and goal for him. If he were to graduate on time he’d be 19 at graduation and he feels a strong passion to want to serve his country. Not just for one round of duty but wants to make a career of it. We went over how we could make this work with summer and dual classes. I’m excited for his next year and watching him work towards this goal. His passion is admirable and beautiful.

I have a student that is a freshman who was encouraged by her mother to do four-year planning at her young age. She is very much an academic kiddo and was confused and overwhelmed by all of the course options. We narrowed down some courses for her to focus on as she is on an Engineering track. It was great seeing the impact it had on her as she now knows where she should be focusing her time and which classes to aspire to take. Just a little guidance in the right direction was all she needed to realize she is capable of doing the courses we outlined.

International student felt completely lost starting their senior year in the states. Met with student weekly for entirety of 1st semester to attempt to ease transition and hold a consistent area where they could ask questions and talk through difficulties. Student has continued to come back without weekly reminders and is set to start college in the fall to study business.

I recently met with a student after a classroom guidance lesson that thought he might be interested in a health care job after high school/college because he was really enjoying his intro to healthcare. I told her the sky was the limit - not to hesitate to apply anywhere that interested her, including Harvard. We found out earlier this year that she got in!

I helped a student with mental health and medical concerns through hospital homebound to graduate this school year. I did this by collaborating with her teachers and organizing her work. She has been on hospital homebound for the last couple years. I also taught her to be an advocate for herself through emailing and talking to teachers when she doesn’t understand or needs work. I also work closely with the family to ensure they feel supported by the school. The impact I had on the student is I helped her toward graduation. She was severely off track when she transferred to us and I encouraged her to do what she could to graduate. Even if it is a year later (fifth year senior) she is almost finished and I am proud of her! 😊

I had a student last year who was severely of track. I called him in my office and told him that although he was off track, he could overcome where he currently was, to where he wanted to be. We mapped out all of the classes he had to recover between both semesters. He would need to pass everything in his schedule to graduate. He was very grateful that I poured in to him because, no one has graduated in his family before him.

The area of need was personal support when my 4th grade student had ICE come to his home. He was made to come out of his home with his family, with his hands up and had a taser pointed at him. He initially said he was ok, but after talking to his Mom, he was not ok as he wasn't eating or sleeping. The social worker and I started checking in with him, letting him share his thoughts and feelings. We reassured him that he had our support and that he could always talk to us. I also completed a referral to CHRIS 180.

I worked with one of my one of my seniors who had been undecided for a while about what he wanted to do. I asked him questions to get him to think about his wants and needs and encouraged him to think about realistic options. I showed him a range of resources (including Naviance and GA Futures). This particular student did not know what he wanted to do post graduation. We had several discussions. He finally realized he didn't want to go to a four year college. He was tired of school. He took his interest surveys and did asked with his father. He decided he wanted to be a commercial truck driver. He was not old enough to attend truck driving school, so we took an alternate route. I made some calls, got him enrolled in DE at West Georgia Tech and he transitioned into the truck driver's program.

My student is KS. She loss her mother during her senior year after a long struggle with addiction. The student, who was a top student, lost her way in that moment. She became unengaged and lost focus of her post secondary pursuits. Luckily, I was able to connect with her and encourage her to push through. I supported with her college essays and scholarship essays to ensure she did not miss any deadlines during this time of grief and sadness. Fortunately, she was able to earn a major scholarship, attend college and medical school. She is thriving!

I had a student that came to my office and was very upset. She felt like it was hard to express herself to her parents. I provide support by allowing the student to speak on why she felt this way and we were able to come up with strategies to get her to feeling more comfortable speaking with her parents about how she’s feeling and what she’s going through. The student began to communicate with her parents through writing letters and she said it began to become easier to talk to her mom. I believe I was impactful because I was able to calm the student and allow her to brainstorm on her emotions and make decisions to move forward to better her communication with her parents.

I recently had a student approach me about earning duplicate TCC pathways. She wanted to switch her current pathway from Avionics to CNA. Based on everything that we both researched, we mapped out a way that she could complete her current pathway and pursue her love for a nursing program.

I had a student who was self destructive and violent towards others. I spent some time with her and learned that she was very smart, but choose a crowd that accepted her behavior. Over time, I was able to point out to her that she stayed frustrated because she kept herself with people who were not on her level mentally. While we worked on her emotional needs and responses, I challenged her to elevate her academic goals(dual enrollment). She eventually became a full time dual enrollment student, broke away from bad influences, and leveled out emotionally. Now she is a first generation student at college and I couldn’t be more proud.

I once had a student that came from out of the country and had a hard time transitioning. He was almost at graduation in his country and did not want to stay in school another year. Additionally, he had trouble at home and needed to work to survive. He needed a flexibility to work and complete work. I worked with him and his teachers to make a plan to help him get to graduation. I called him daily to make sure he was working on assignments when not at school and connected him with a teacher that worked with him one-on-one to complete his assignments. The final results was he was able to graduate in the summer graduation ceremony just a year behind where he would have been in his country!

Added him to my lunch bunch group with other students. Daily check ins/outs. Individual Counseling to build esteem and resilience. Realizing what’s in his control and what is not
