Text to Self Connection

In the book 'Speak' the text says“It seems like my parents gave up on magic when I figured out the Santa lie. Maybe I shouldn’t have told them I knew where the presents really came from. It broke their hearts.”(Anderson, 70) I connect to this because when I told my parents I found a price tag under a snow globe they gave me and said I don't believe in Santa anymore, they said I was right. Then I continued to ask if any other fictional characters were real, and they said no. Since they stopped giving me presents from 'Santa' and seem pretty heart broken about it.

An Inference I've Made

I can infer that Melinda is depressed. I think this because in the text it says “I open up a paper clip and scratch it across the inside of my left wrist. Pitiful. If a suicide attempt is a cry for help, then what is this?” (Anderson, 86) I think this shows that Melinda is depressed because majority of the time, self harm is a red flag someone is depressed. Melinda also deals with bullying and a dysfunctional family. These things can build up and cause someone to be depressed.

My Prediction

I predict that Melinda will soon tell her parents, friends, or an adult she trusts about what really happened at the party. I think this because in the text it says “I almost tell them right then and there. Tears flood my eyes.” (Anderson, 72) The text also says “I want to tell them everything as we sit there by our plastic Christmas tree while the Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer video plays”(Anderson, 72)

These explain that she so badly wants to tell her parents about what really happened, but backed out last second. I think eventually Melinda will break and tell someone what happened at the party.

My review so far

I love Speak so far! It is very realistic and relatable for teens. It always leaves me on the edge of my seat, wondering what will happen next. It keeps me engaged and interested. I would recommend this book to a friend because I think they would be engaged and relate as well.
