Video Games are Actually Good For You

"Video games rot your brain. You lose concentration. Video games make you dull. Video games are a distraction and are no use at all.

(storypick.com)

All of these are things that typical stereotypes believe in. It's a time-honored myth that all video games are bad and how they should be done away with. Oh. Don't forget about the occasional, "There weren't these things in the good Ol' dayz." To be totally honest, some of them are right. Played in excess amounts, video games can be detrimental to your health, and eventually lead to serious problems with addiction. With your eyes glued to a screen and only thinking about kills and epic trick shots, you become oblivious to the world around you. However, recent studies have shown that many different video games are essential to the next generation of people because they help develop problem-solving skills, they reduce stress, and they help us with developing important social skills. According to forbes.com,

"Individualized game play might be better than television because they’re more interactive. These days, in fact, most storytelling is interactive. [...] And technology is so adept at providing ‘adaptive feedback’ that it proves to be an exceptionally effective teaching tool."

This fragment of text from courtesy of forbes.com that basically states that interactive media like video games is better than non-interactive types of media like watching TV.
On Texas A&M International, Dr. Christopher J. Ferguson states,

"Adolescents—male and female—who play violent video games long-term handle stress better than non-playing adolescents and become less depressed and less hostile following a stressful task"

Ferguson is stating that most adolescents who play video games are better at managing stressful situations in 'dark times'. They are used to this type of stress while playing video games.
Author Vinay Devnath from storypick.com writes,

No, not all gamers are sitting in their moms’ basements, overweight and in their smelly brown underwear, chugging on soft drinks at the rate of 10 liters an hour. Studies have shown that video games actually help you become social. 70% of all gamers play with someone else on the internet. They make friends too.

By playing video games, gamers are not only able to make new friends online but also create a bond with their old ones. They also develop key problem-solving skills that are needed in everyday life. Though it isn't deniable that spending an excess amount of time playing video games is detrimental to your health, however, playing in controlled amounts without getting too absorbed in the game can lead to a better lifestyle.
