The groundbreaking ceremony for Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) occurred on June 1, 1993, when the administration of Mahathir Mohamad concluded that the current Kuala Lumpur airport, then known as Subang International Airport (now Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport), could not manage future demand. The airport was built mostly by a few state-owned construction businesses as well as Ekovest Berhad, which is led by Tan Sri Datuk Lim Kang Hoo. It was built as part of Malaysia's Multimedia Super Corridor, a massive development plan. Kisho Kurokawa, a Japanese architect, was the principal designer of the new airport terminal.
Subang Airport's Terminal 1 structure was dismantled once KLIA was completed. Malaysia Airports agreed to convert the existing Terminal 3 into a turboprop and charter airport flanked by a residential area and a business park. KUL was relocated from Subang Airport, which today handles only turboprops, general aviation, and military aircraft. The IATA code for Subang Airport has subsequently been changed to SZB.

The airport is part of the KLIA Aeropolis and has two main terminals: the historic KLIA Main terminal and the modern terminal 2, often known as klia2. Kisho Kurokawa, a Japanese architect, built KLIA Main with an emphasis on natural lighting throughout the airport complex. The abstract symbolic architecture by the late Kisho Kurokawa spans 38.4m over a grid pattern, allowing for future additions, and incorporates Islamic geometry and cutting-edge technology with the tropical jungle in mind.
