Post 1 - Mediterranean World in 33 CE

Rome controlled much of the Mediterranean World due to conquering the Western European Army. In 246 BCE, the first of three wars between the Roman Empire and the Carthaginians, known as the Punic Wars, occurred. This conflict ended in 146 CE, exactly 100 years later. In the second war, the Romans lost several battles. However, by the third war, the Romans were strong enough to capture the Catharge City which was then burned and all signs of city were destroyed. With this, the Roman's became the most powerful Mediterranean state giving them the opportunity to expand their empire. The main languages that were commonly spoken in the European area were Hebrew and Greek. Consequently, Paul the Apostle mainly travelled to the areas that spoke these languages. The different ethnic or cultural groups living in the regions of the Mediterranean World include Greek, Jewish and Hebrew citizens. All of these citizens were the original listeners of Paul. Goods and people were transported through the Mediterranean Sea by ship trading mostly wine, olive oil, weapons and perishable goods. The Silk Road was also used to trade these goods. Paul frequently travelled to Crete, Macedonia, Italy and Galatia. Within these regions, he visited the cities of Tarsus, Rome, Greece, Philippi, Thessalonica, Corinth, Antioch, Nazareth, Jerusalem, Barea, Syria and Colossae.

The conversion of Saul of Tarsus was very significant as his relationship with Jesus became the centre of his life. This occurred whilst Saul was on the road to Damascus where he was struck down by a blinding light which for three days, left him blind. Saul believed this to be a vision of Jesus which changed the way he acted. Once being a critic and persecutor of Christians, he committed his life to sharing his passionate conviction of his friendship with Jesus. Therefore, changing his name to Paul.

The purpose, in general, of Paul's letters, was to ensure that all Christian communities would continue to grow. The scriptures of Colossians, focuses on comfort, life and forgiveness. The reason for this preaching was to express that the Colossians should stay focused on Christ and the authentic Gospel messages. The main themes and messages of the letters of Paul in general were about Christs' death and resurrection, shown in Galatians 6:14, which is one of seven scriptures where it is evident. Paul also focussed on righteousness, salvation, hope and joy which can be evident in 1 Thessalonians 5:9 and Romans 8:28–39

The cultural challenges for Paul that is revealed in Romans was speaking truly with the Jewish and Gentile Christians. This means that Paul, although growing up in a Jewish background and disliking Christians, he challenged himself to speak the true beliefs and values of Christianity. This was done by travelling to cities with a Jewish background and converting them to Christianity.

The message from Paul for us today is from 1 Corinthians, 12:4-7, “4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone.” This excerpt states that even though many aspects to life are different and vary, many of these are somewhat the same. For example, us as humans can vary, but we are all still the same in different ways. This being us as a Christian community, sharing common interests with one another or coming from the same background or heritage.
