1. What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic?

In the poem "The Soul Selects Her Own Society", Emily Dickinson has an authoritative tone. For instance, the lines, "The Soul selects her own Society — / Then — shuts the Door — / To her divine Majority —" (Dickinson, lines 1-3), show an authoritative tone. These lines allude to how Dickinson had authority over herself to make her decisions by living a life secluded from others. This makes the poem ironic because although most people enjoy living a life full of people, she lives secluded from the rest of society, saying how it was her decision to lead this lifestyle.

4. What figures of speech are used? How do they contribute to the tone and meaning of the poem?

The poem "The Soul Selects Her Own Society" by Emily Dickinson uses various figures of speech to allow readers to gain a deeper insight into the meaning behind her words. For instance, in the line, "The Soul selects her own Society —", Dickinson uses personification to make her writing more vivid and to explain the message of the poem (Dickinson, line 1). This line contributes to the tone of the poem by using the phrase "The Soul selects" to indicate an authoritative tone. It adds depth to the poem by allowing abstract nouns to have action.

5. Are there any symbols? What do they mean? Are they universal symbols or do they arise from the context of this poem?

A symbol that can be found inside the poem could be the Emperor and the chariots as they can symbolize wealth and power. Chariots are the "grand entrance" to an emperor because the emperor is powerful and wealthy that he can have such an entrance. In the poem, "she notes the Chariots --- pausing --- / At her low gate --- / Unmoved --- an Emperor be kneeling" (Dickinson, lines 5-7). The Emperor kneeling is also connected to her own love life. The symbols are universal because typically an Emperor has great wealth and power.

6. What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.

The theme of the poem is how only you know yourself and how only you can decide who you want to let into your life. The theme is about self-reliance and independence. "The Soul selects her own Society" (Dickinson, line 1). This quote further supports my idea of how you have the freedom to choose, what "society" you would like to be in.
