This padlet will be dedicated to reviewing Chapters 4-5 (pp.66-98) by having students engage in finding important textual evidence for assigned pages. They will then describe WHY the selected quote is significant to the OVERALL novel in their own words.r

Curley's wife asks Lennie where he'd get them bruises on his face. He replays, guiltily, "He got his han' caught in a machine". This response shows how Lennie is bad at lying and how innocent he is. Of course, Curley's wife does not buy it. Crooks gets angry and stands up for themselves. He says, coldly, "You got no rights comin' in a colored man's room". For a moment, Crooks really believe that he might be able to leave the ranch with George, Lennie, and Candy. However, Curley's wife sends him back to the reality in just a second. She threatens him by saying, "I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it ain't even funny".

This quote is a continuation from the beginning where Lennie and Candy talk about their dream and Crooks teases them. "You guys is just kiddin' yourself. You'll talk about it a hell of a lot, but you won't get no land. You'll be a swamper here till they take you out in a box. Hell, I seen too many guys. Lennie here'll quit an' be on the road in two, three weeks. Seems like ever' guy got land his head". With Crooks saying all of these things, one can foreshadow what may happen next. Crooks has good reason to tease them about men owning land because he has seen many people come by that ranch with the same mindset.

Through these pages the author shows how differently Crooks is treated at the Ranch, and how he reacts to it. When Curleys wife used her power over Crooks due to the color difference, Crooks demeanor changed. ¨´Maybe you guys better go,´ he said. ´I aint sure I want you in here no more´¨ (82), in the end Crooks is reminded of his race and how little power he has. He even decides at the last minute to take no part in the guys´ dream any more when he says, ¨´-jus´ forget it,´ said Crooks. ´I didn´ mean it´¨ 83).

In pages 94-96 Candy and George find Curley's wife laying on the floor lifeless. Candy asks George if they can have their American Dream still. They knew that they lost their American Dream. George tells Candy to wait for a few minutes so it gives him time to show he was't part of the murder. Candy brings the rest of the crew and Curley knows that it was Lennie and he wants to kill him. "He worked himself into a fury. 'I'm gonna get him. I'm going for my shotgun. I'll kill the big son-of-a-bitch myself''' (96). This quote shows Curleys anger for Lennie after what happened.

Curley's wife complains why she can't talk to any other men on the ranch, but soon moves on to the dream she had. "'...I met one of the actors. He says I could go with that show. But my ol' lady wouldn't let me...because I was on'y fifteen...If I'd went, I wouldn't be livin' like this...'"(88). This quotes tell us that Curley's wife had a dream of being an actor, but unfortunately ended up with Curley on the ranch, living a lonely life.

In this page, Crooks asks Lennie what he would do if George doesn't come back. Lennie got frightened and told Crooks that George will always come back for him and that he would never leave him alone. Stienbeck wrote,"I didn't mean to scare you, He'll come back. I was talkin' about myself" (73). This is important because Crooks is explianing how lonely he is and it drives him crazy, would do anything to gain friendship or company, just like Curley's wife does.

"Crooks, THE NEGRO stable buck, had his bunk in the harness room..." (66). This is important because it shows that Crooks is separated from everyone because he is black.

"Why can't I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely"(86). This quote says a lot about society. It goes with the mindset of life during the mid-1900's. This being that women should be seen and not heard. Curley is very possessive with his wife and always suspects the worse from her. He would prefer for her to be isolated in their house, rather than risk getting cheated on. This causes Curley's wife to be lonely and have no one to talk to, as she is, to my knowledge, the only women at that ranch. It's like how Crooks said earlier, loneliness can drive a person insane. At the end of the day, Curley's wife just wants a friend, but she knows that Curley wouldn't want that.

After everyone sees Curley's wife dead Curley is determined to kill Lennie. Slim told George, "'But Curley's gonna want to shoot 'im. Curley's still mad about his hand'"(97). You would guess that Slim would say that Curley wants to kill Lennie for his wife's death but that is not the case. It's almost as if Curley didn't really love or care about his wife and he'd rather kill Lennie for his pride than his wife. His need to beat Lennie has gone so far that he will hunt Lennie down.
