Thanaka : traditional medicine

The four elements earth, water, fire, and air are the concepts embraced by traditional medicine in Burma(Cho & Kobayashi, 2021). Herbal medicines are meant to restore balance since practitioners think that imbalances among these elements cause illness(Cho & Kobayashi, 2021).Traditional medicine continues to be an essential part of healthcare in Burma (Myanmar), where it is deeply rooted in spiritual and cultural traditions(Cho & Kobayashi, 2021). Thanaka, a yellowish paste formed from the bark of the Thanaka tree, is essential to this custom. Because of its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial qualities, Thanaka is used as a natural sunscreen, skin moisturizer, and cosmetic on both the face and body (Cho & Kobayashi, 2021).

Current Opinion in Green and Sustainable Chemistry, 27, 100413. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cogsc.2020.100413

I've found Domain 1: Clinical Expert to be especially insightful as a nursing student studying the Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice: Working with People from Migrant and Refugee Backgrounds competency standards framework.Competency Standard 1.2: Knowledge of Cultural Practices, 'Clinicians recognise the impact of refugee-like experiences stood' out to me as crucial for providing culturally sensitive care. The significance of incorporating cultural understanding into nursing practice has been emphasised by Competency Standard 1.2, guaranteeing that treatment is efficient and fair. This will be the foundation of my approach to nursing going forward, both in terms of education and practice. In order to improve my cultural competency going forward, I intend to strongly seek out cultural knowledge for each patient and engage in ongoing education.Fitzgerald, S.

The experiences of Burmese refugees who resettle in Australia are significantly shaped by the values of social inclusion and non-discrimination(Green, 2010).Social inclusion for Burmese refugees includes full engagement in the community as well as physical settlement. This covers having access to jobs, healthcare, and education. To guarantee that refugees from Burma—many of whom may be members of ethnic minorities like the Rohingya—do not encounter obstacles because of biases based on ethnic origin, racial background, or religion, nondiscrimination is essential(Green, 2010). Discrimination may increase trauma, result in unequal access to resources, and cause social isolation.

Green, J. (2010).

Conflict, persecution, and displacement have caused serious trauma to a large number of Burmese refugees. PTSD may develop from this. PTSD may severely limit a refugee's capacity to adapt to their new surroundings and obtain essential treatments(Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide, 2023).By providing trauma-informed care, it is possible to mitigate the effects of Burmese refugees' traumatic experiences while also promoting their general well-being and assimilation into Australian society. It is essential that the healthcare provider and the refugee build a trustworthy relationship (Kercood & Morita-Mullaney, 2015). Respecting the patient's requirements and pace, as well as maintaining continuous and compassionate communication, can help achieve this (Kercood & Morita-Mullaney, 2015).

Kercood, S., & Morita-Mullaney, T.
