What is the problem?

One of the problems is that genocides are happening way too much. One of the most famous genocides was the Holocaust. The Holocaust was a genocide, a mass killing of a certain race, that targeted Jewish people. The leader of the Holocaust was Adolf Hitler. He had an army called the Nazis who obeyed everything he said. Their orders were to bring all the Jews into gas chambers so they could kill them groups at a time. Some were even just killed on sight because they ran away. Kids were separated from their families. People were scared, alone and worried of what came next. The kill count of the Holocaust was 6 Million Jews and 17 Million killed in total. Another genocide was the Rwandan Genocide which took 1 million lives of Rwandan people. Leaders like Adolf Hitler, Augustin Bizimungu Bernard Munyagishari and Georges Rutaganda are the root causes for why these genocides are happening so much more often than they used to. They have so much hate for a certain race that they go out of their way to kill them all. The Rwandan Genocide is the one I am focusing on for this padlet.

How do genocides affect the world and the community

Genocides affect people all over the world. They leave people traumatized. They leave millions dead. Some with deficits. Some with lost limbs. They leave Parents without their children. They leave children without parents. When a genocide is successful there are refugees who flood into another country. It weakens the military force. It makes people scared into thinking about what would happen if history repeated itself. It destroys relationships between religions and people. In the Rwandan Genocide over 700,000 people died. This big of a hit would definitely change how the country functioned from there on. The community is now flooded with people with no money, no homes and no family. Many refugees have went to Rwanda because of the decrease in people. With less people they would have a better chance and getting jobs but the downside was that Rwanda lost alot of money from the Genocide so there was less money to give to the workers which lead to some losing homes and having to be homeless. This is how the Rwandan Genocide affected the community.

Why should the world be concerned about this issue?

Genocide is one of the most hated and most gruesome crime ever. Killing thousands of people all because of hatred for that race. If another genocide were to happen the rest of the world should be very concerned and step in. When people are dying they need help! If you were the one in the genocide you would want someone to help you and rescue you. Right? For example the Holocaust, one of the worst genocides in history. When Poland was invaded and the Jews were getting killed in gas chambers the United States, France, Great Britain and The Soviet Union all stepped in to stop this madness. That should happen for every single genocide. One reason that the rest of the world should be concerned about this issue is because thousands of people are dying which is plummeting the population and if it were to happen to anybody else they would want help from the world as well.

Journal Entry 1: The date is June 19th 1994. I am being held somewhere against my will. There are hundreds of us in here. We all don’t even have moving space. Sometimes the guards would push someone which would tumble everyone over just to see us have to struggle to get up. We are being held until the 21st of June when they kill us all. I was separated from my family. I am so scared for my family. The people here don’t give us food nor water. We are all here just suffering and dying out. I’ve been looking for a way out of this horrible place. Since there are so many people sickness is spreading easily. I think that I got pneumonia from this place. There are about 15-20 people per cell. The cells are unsanitary and covered in mold and insects. I’m terrified because they could torture us, they could kill us instantly or they could gas us all. I've seen some people get skinned alive and left in their cell to suffer. My final wish is to see my family again before I go on to my next life. I hope that I could go say goodbye to them one last time. I hope that someone finds this message and gives it to my family one day if they survive. Goodbye.

Right now researchers are trying to create a prediction system for when the next genocides will happen. There are graphs now showing which countries are at high risk of genocide eventually. Researchers believe that one reason that gencodies happen so often is because people who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it. When people don’t have the knowledge they don’t know the effects of what they do. As of right now one of the countries at high risk of genocide is the Democratic Republic of the Congo with a 31%. Afghanistan and Egypt are at 24% and South Sudan is at 18%. Now these people are watching these countries to see if they do start a genocide.
