Visiting the Navajo National Monument in Arizona

Edward Cerruti has served as an attorney for more than 15 years, litigating such matters as insurance coverage, contracts, and fraud. In his leisure time, Edward Cerruti enjoys traveling in the United States, including to the Navajo National Monument in Arizona.

Located on the Shonto Plateau within the Navajo Nation near Kayenta, the Navajo National Monument encompasses three cliff dwellings set beneath overhanging sandstone. The Anasazi tribe, a precursor to the Navajo and Pueblo peoples, built the dwellings sometime in the 13th century. Research indicates that while the Anasazi lived there only 50 years, they left many artifacts, which were discovered in the early 20th century.

The most accessible of the park’s three cliff dwellings is the 135-room Betatakin. Tourists can either walk a half mile from the visitor center to see the dwellings from a distance or take a challenging 2.5-mile hike to see them up close.

Harder to reach but equally impressive is Keet Seel, which sits 8.5 miles from the visitor center. Most of Keet Steel’s rooms are prohibited to visitors, however. A third set of dwellings, Inscription House, is closed because of its fragile condition.

Although parts of the park are open year-round, daily tours are possible only from the end of May through the middle of September. The only exception are hikes on the shorter trail to Betatakin, which are available on non-summer weekends when the weather permits.
