He thought of jewelled hilts

For daggers in plaid socks; of smart salutes;

And care of arms; and leave; and pay arrears;

Esprit de corps; and hints for young recruits.

And soon, he was drafted out with drums and cheers.

*        *        *        *        *

Some cheered him home, but not as crowds cheer Goal.

Only a solemn man who brought him fruits

Thanked him; and then inquired about his soul.

*        *        *        *        *

Now, he will spend a few sick years in institutes,

And do what things the rules consider wise,

And take whatever pity they may dole.

Tonight he noticed how the women's eyes

Passed from him to the strong men that were whole.

How cold and late it is! This is the winter part of it, because it is full of depression (taking whatever pity they may dole), lethargy, (wants to be put into bed) darkness, and Wilfred Owen wants you think of this because he talks about "cold" and "late" which are both parts of the winter setting.

Reading this section reminds me of summer or spring since there's use of lighter, more happier words to describe the soldiers life before he "threw away his knees". It relates to human seasons, more so summer, when he was living life and unbothered by his decisions, something he really misses. Another thing, the use of colour to describe the trees. It could be a symbol of safety since blue often means trust etc.

Golden age/metamorphosis archetype

Wilfred Owen’s “Disabled” is based on the golden age and iron age archetype. Owen switches between the two archetypes by showing them through the soldier’s memories. His life before the war was full of peace, pleasure, and true happiness. Whereas afterwards, his life was filled with feelings of frustration and helplessness. The golden age archetype is intertwined with the metamorphosis archetype by showing how the vile environment that the soldier suffered in resulted in his physical and internal transformation. When the soldier became disabled, not only did he start to view himself as undesirable, but his perspective on society also altered by perceiving the world as a nasty, monstrous hell and perceiving people as self-centered.
