The Road to the Classroom

During high school, I worked at an after-school program where I taught and supported students by guiding them through the program’s curriculum and helping them navigate everyday challenges. I was constantly learning how to encourage students to express their personalities, be their personal cheerleader, and support them through their struggles. While some days were exhausting, it was the most rewarding job I’ve ever had. In the picture above, one of my kids was following me around the cafeteria copying what I did saying, "Ms. Lily, I want to become a teacher just like you." That experience confirmed my passion for working with children. It taught me patience, empathy, and how meaningful it is to make even a small difference in a child’s life.

My Classroom Training Era

As a first generation college student, coming to the U of A, a big university, I was scared. I was scared to ask for help or use resources provided because I didn't want to admit to struggling. While education might seem like an "easy" major to others, I still have to give my all and work just as hard as others. There's been some classes where I've had anxiety that I wasn't smart enough to pass and even felt embarrassed that I was struggling with elementary classes. This made me want to try even harder in my classes because I know there are students out there right now who are struggling and are scared to reach out for help. In the picture above, my math instructor was filling me with confidence as I was scared for a test we had that day. She encouraged me and made me feel like I could kill this test... which I did. I strive to be how gentle, encouraging, and loving she was in my future classroom.

From Student Life to Teaching Life

After graduation in 2027, I plan to move back to my home town, Grapevine, Texas, and work within my home district. I thought I wanted to teach kindergarten, but after working with 2nd graders this summer, I'm not really sure what grade I'd like to teach. I'd be happy in any grade though! I plan to create a fun, loving, safe, nurturing environment where my students feel supported and valued. I hope to make a lasting impact on their lives. A few years into teaching, I plan to go back for my master’s degree and possibly get certified in special education. In the photo above, you can see my campers proudly posing with their “Ohana means to me…” drawings of their families. They continue to shape my vision of what it means to show up with love, patience, and purpose in the classroom.
